About Sean Carty

My experience as a Senior Software Engineer ranges all across the stack, from UI to QA to Backend to DevOps. Recently, I've been specializing in cloud computing and systems architecture in support of dynamic machine learning. I've led teams on projects as diverse as prototyping and productionizing cutting edge applied online machine learning algorithms, to architecting business-critical primary APIs and the data pipelines they expose.Collaboration and communication are among my strongest skills. My teams have always been globally distributed, and I have a proven track record of leadership and collaboration in the modern remote work environment. I am an expert in translating technical details to non-technical audiences, and similarly expert in working with product teams to consume business requirements and translate those into technical requirements and implementation plans. My passion is leading teams that deliver robust, extensible solutions that grow to meet customer needs quickly and reliably.

    Lead Mlops Engineer
    Sorcero Oct 2021 - Present
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
    - Drove the MLOps transformation at Sorcero by analyzing the pain points for the AI team, and collaborating with them to design and implement ways to organize their work and streamline their path to production on GCP through experiment tracking, packaging, and deployment. Identified a key architectural flaw in the company’s use of Dataflow and steered us away from expending significant resources in a problematic solution. Pivoted to a GCP cloud-native architecture featuing Google Cloud Run, Google Cloud Storage, and Dataproc for scalable execution of batch and real time workloads.- Managed a cross-functional team in the development, deployment, and operation of two separate ML-based pharmacovigilance prototype products to support commercial sales efforts. Ensured a flawless customer experience in the first prototype which was delivered in one week. Additional weekly deliveries explored go to market alternatives with the customer. These efforts successfully converted this customer from POC to pilot.- Created a python dependency management scheme to allow sharing internal and external packages in a consistent and reliable manner by properly publishing semantic versioned python packages to Google Artifact Registry. This directly enabled reproducibility, a key MLOps initiative.- Established an incident response procedure to ensure timely and organized response to production outages and incidents. After a few incidents with thorough retrospectives, production incidents went from being frequent occurrences to exceptionally rare events.- Operationalized AI capabilities prototyped by the research team. Developed real-time REST interfaces optimized for response time, and batch-oriented data pipelines optimized for massive scale and operational expense using Google Dataproc (Spark).
  • Glynt.Ai

    Glynt.Ai Dec 2018 - Oct 2021
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
    - Led the API and System Orchestration team to architect a refactor to our backend systems and interface to support a novel ML-based solution. Continually set the product up for scale and extensibility as we moved from prototyping to productionizing. Produced detailed API documentation that both our customers and our own team relied on.- Collaborated with backend services teams to develop consistent internal interfaces and orchestrate complex workflows with numerous independent stages, artifacts, and operational challenges. Ensured MLOps best practices throughout the pipeline.- Implemented cloud computing resources on AWS and other third party vendors, such as Auth0, to optimize for cost at scale, enhance monitoring and alerting, and improve real-world runtime for users. Championed infrastructure-as-code as standard practice.- Spearheaded initiatives around improving developer lifecycles and project organization to enhance efficiency and reproducability of ML deliverables.- Designed and implemented a unit- and integration- test and linting framework to be shared by all teams in the engineering department. Worked with teams to implement the tox and pytest based framework into their components, and educated team members on how to utilize the framework. This system was integrated into Concourse CI and GitHub. The framework fostered knowledge sharing and cross-team efforts.

Led the migration to the new tooling. Our ability to write new test cases and quickly fix broken tests was massively improved.
