I practice patent litigation and client counseling, with an emphasis on electrical and computer technologies such as computer hardware/architecture, software, communication networks, signal processing and content management systems. I work closely with open source software and standards, including advising companies regarding risks when using and distributing open source software, when they are creating open source software policies, or when they are contemplating participation in various standards-setting organizations. I have appeared before U.S. district courts, the Court of Federal Claims, U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. My PTAB experience includes representing both petitioners and patent owners. And I have developed a particular focus on patent-eligibility jurisprudence. I worked on the first ever post-grant review (PGR) of a covered business method (CBM) patent petitioned by a government agency.Prior to joining Finnegan, I worked for five years at Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems as a system architect. My work involved designing and developing system architectures, primarily focusing on signal processing and sensing technology. I also helped develop the company’s open source software policy. Representative matters include:Represented InterDigital in the enforcement of patents relating to telecommunication technologies, including 2G and 3G wireless handsets.Defended various Sony entities in multiple patent infringement lawsuits, involving electronic, computer software, and mechanical technologies. Represented U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in protecting, defending, and enforcing electronic, mechanical, computer, and software innovations.
