Systems Engineer I
Member of the Systems Engineering team that includes around a dozen team members that is responsible for managing the ~3000 virtual machines hosted throughout Wisconsin, as well as the virtualization hosts, storage infrastructure and a handful of physical servers that are in use. Primary duties are implementing, upgrading, and maintaining the VMware VSphere virtual infrastructure, as well as the virtualization hosts and physical servers. This includes drivers, firmware, and hardware replacements for hosts and physical servers, as well as VSphere updates and upgrades for the virtualization platform. One of two primary engineers responsible for creating and maintaining our expansive automated SFTP transfer implementation that sends and receives data for thousands of systems, to and from hundreds of vendors. Responsible for handling internal level 3 support tickets that are escalated to the Systems Engineering team in a quick and efficient manner, handling issues involving new SFTP scripts, AD account creation, and network location access, or break fix issues such as services not responding on a server, VMs being unresponsive, or providing vendor access for application troubleshooting, all the while providing excellent customer service to the users entering these tickets. Experienced in managing Cisco UCS-C series hardware, as well as deploying and managing Windows Server VMs, with minor experience involving Linux distributions. Adept at following a thorough and extensive change control process involving multiple review steps and extensive documentation. Heavily involved in the infrastructure wide Window Server 2008 End of Life upgrade project. Experienced with external support cases and working with external engineers for hardware and application issues to reach resolutions swiftly.
Help Desk Technician
Assisted students and faculty with technical issues through multiple methods, including phone, email, and in-person walk-up support. Opened, updated, and closed well documented support tickets to achieve the highest quality service and customer support. Used troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and repair laptops with various issues, such as malware, out of date drivers or firmware, missing software, etc. I also diagnosed and repaired hardware faults, such as failed hard drives, batteries, and screens in a separate role as a PC repair technician. My other duties in this role included contacting support to complete warranty hardware returns as well as travelling to faculty locations around campus to assist them with non-mobile technical issues.
Engineering Consultant Intern
I returned to Heartland for a third summer internship in 2017, which was my final summer before I graduated from UW-Stout. This summer my mentor was the team lead of the small business team that I was on. As such, he was much more busy with duties other than direct customer support, so I worked with my mentor directly a lot less this summer. Instead, as the team lead, he knew what the engineers on our team were working on and would delegate me to help out on different projects as needed. I was working much more independently than the previous two summers as I was working with multiple different engineers and was keeping track of my duties for each project I was a part of. After the first couple weeks of the summer I was communicating with the rest of the team myself and I was finding work to keep me busy on my own, without relying on my team lead and mentor to find me things to do. Throughout the summer I worked with almost every engineer on the team, and I was able to seamlessly switch between different projects for different customers, as well as working with different coworkers.
Engineering Consultant Intern
I was brought back by Heartland Business Systems for another internship in 2016, although a shorter one as I was on a university study abroad trip that did not end until the end of June. Heartland still agreed to have me back for a shorter summer. My responsibilities this summer were much the same as they were in 2015, but I was working much more independently, being given more tasks to complete by my mentor than being guided through or shadowing other tasks. I was also brought along for overnight and multiple day trips to more distant customers and larger installs and go-lives
Engineering Consultant Intern
Shadowed and assisted the full time engineer I was assigned to with their duties as a small business consultant. Throughout this summer I was building new PC workstations and getting them ready for deployment at a customer, as well as building, configuring, and deploying servers for customers. This included installing ESX, deploying Windows Server VMs, creating domains, configuring domain controllers, DNS, file servers, and other server infrastructure details that the customer required. For the workstation side, I was installing Windows updates, joining computers to domains, and ensuring that they had the correct software and security settings applied, on a customer-needs basis. I often traveled on-site with the engineer I was assigned to and provided excellent in person customer service during new equipment installs as well as troubleshooting and resolving problems. I was also required to accurately record my hours worked for each customer each week for billing purposes.
