• Studied the visible-light-induced inhibition of beta-amyloid aggregation (commonly known to be associated with Alzheimer’s disease) using a photochemical biomaterial known as Rose Bengal.• Used Circular Dichroism to determine the secondary structure of the amyloid protein. Monitored transition from the non-amyloidogenic unordered/alpha-helix conformation of beta-amyloid small monomers to the amyloidogenic beta-sheet rich conformation of beta-amyloid fibrils.• Mastered preparation of amyloid-beta fibrils and oligomers. Fully grown amyloid proteins were inserted into PC12 cells (from the rat adrenal medulla), then performed MTT assays to determine cytotoxicity. • Learned to operate material analysis equipment, such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Two-dimensional images of single-touch AFM measurements of beta-amyloid oligomers were taken multiple times to monitor the growth of beta-amyloid aggregation.
