About Sean Matharoo
As Assistant Professor & Jacques Hardré Fellow of French and Francophone Studies in the Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I'm writing a book about speculative poetics and philosophy. I'm also an alumnus of the Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity; Book Review Assistant Editor for Ecozon@; an affiliate with Energy Lab Today at Georgia Tech; and, a partner/collaborator with Vision Inclusive. I received my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Riverside. I've published articles about my research in Green Letters, Horror Studies, and Alienocene; a book chapter in an edited collection about author Philip K. Dick; book reviews in my fields of study in Ecozon@, Science Fiction Studies, the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, and Science Fiction Film and Television; a hypertextual interview with filmmaker Craig Baldwin in the Eaton Journal of Archival Research in Science Fiction; an interview with writer Erik Davis in the Los Angeles Review of Books; an encyclopedia article about author Samuel R. Delany in Oxford Bibliographies in American Literature; and, encyclopedia entries about poet Charles Baudelaire, author Guy de Maupassant, and the New Weird in Horror Literature through History. I have a forthcoming article about Marie Darrieussecq's science fiction and AI in SITES, and another about astonishment, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Jacques Derrida, and Denise Ferreira da Silva in Mosaic. I'm presently writing essays on Etel Adnan's apocalyptic poetics, French structuralism, and natural philosophy. For three years at the University of California, Riverside, I was a Teaching Assistant for classes in Classics, literature, film, and culture. For three years, I was an Instructor of Record for Introductory French I and II. I have given guest lectures on film, feminism, censorship, and my noise music. As a Fulbright scholar at Ghent University, Belgium, I was the primary advisor for a student’s Master’s thesis about French and anglophone music, poetry, and philosophy. At UNC-Chapel Hill, I facilitate classes on race, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic studies, comic books, postcolonialism, the fantastic, videogames, Maghrebian poetics, surrealism, and AI in French and francophone literature, media, and philosophy. I am accepting graduate advisees working on projects that overlap with my research areas. I'm also a noise musician whose collaborative pieces about the environment may be understood to problematize the presupposition of colonial-racial divisions in thinking and being.
