Director

Current

Nottingham, England, United Kingdom

I gained Rock Climbing, Mountaineering and Sailing qualifications during my time in the Army and used them to take soldiers adventure training. Once I left the Army I stopped taking others despite still loving the outdoors. During the Covid-19 pandemic I was able to evaluate what is important to me, what I enjoy and what I'd like to be able to give back. UK Global Ventures bring together under one banner my various streams of income whilst enabling me to add another - providing away days and trips - for individuals and groups - with a variety of activities to choose from.

Oct 2020 - Sep 2021

Director Consultant

South Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom

I've held this role on and off since 2007, helping businesses gain more business through referrals, by far the best, most cost effective method of gaining business.BNI provides fantastic training, as I love personal development it's a perfect match. I love learning more, to grow my skills as a mentor, as a team player, as a successful business owner, skills I can pass onto the team within my UW role.

Jan 2007 - May 2021

Head Of Residential Projects

Annesley, England, United Kingdom

At a time that I was working from home I had the rare opportunity to collect my son from the childminder. As we were leaving my son turned to his childminder and said, "Bye mum." I realised that chasing my career, chasing the money had increasingly meant time away from the family, becoming a slave to the job and we had passed our children to others to look after.Having started my UW home based part time business in 2002 for an extra couple of hundred pounds each month I realised that if I treated it as a business and not a hobby it would provide me with business income not hobby income.I took the decision to properly build the business. Persistently and consistently building from early 2013 circumstances enabled me to stop employed work and focus on my UW business in the summer of 2015, a decision I will never regret.

Mar 2013 - Jun 2015

Senior Project Delivery Manager

Annesley, England, United Kingdom

Finding a role based closer to home I chose to take a pay cut, but with no accommodation costs I was able to take more net pay home.I loved attention to detail, particularly regarding how money was being spent on the projects, knowing and understanding where it was going and that it was providing value. Communication was a major common theme throughout my P3M career, has been key to build relationships, trust and confidence with clients. This is something I have continued to develop within UW, clear communication to maintain effective and personal customer service.

Mar 2011 - Mar 2013

Associate Director

Dunmow, Essex

After 5 months out of work I eventually found a role that once again meant I worked away during the week. Given my experience previously, and that I'd joined in a senior role, despite working on some really interesting and unique projects I could see the signs. There wasn't the work coming in to support the workforce. I offered to drop my hours to 3 days/week and take the appropriate cut. I also negotiated being able to work from home whenever possible. I used this time off to look for a new role.I had learned from my past to dig my well before I was thirsty.

Jul 2010 - Mar 2011

Project Operations Lead

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Working abroad, managing dispersed teams on major projects was a fabulous challenge that I thrived on.Unfortunately it was shortlived. During my return to the UK at Christmas I was informed there wouldn't be a need for me to go back, I was being made redundant. It had probably been delayed by about 6 months.I was coming back to the UK looking for work in the construction industry at the wrong time, the country was still deep in the throws of recession. If that wasn't enough, I'd left the Army to be there for my wife and family only to end up getting a job that initially meant I worked away during the week but then went to working abroad, the thing I had tried to avoid. Family life was strained.

Oct 2009 - Feb 2010

Associate Design Manager

Leeds, England, United Kingdom

With promotion came increased visibility and increased project value.Working in Leeds and living in Nottingham was putting a strain on family life. We then had the added stress of additional family challenges when the relationship with my wife's side of the family broke down. Add onto this further stress as the financial crash stretched it's claws into the company and we all had to go through a consultation period. I was voted as an employee rep. This gave me increased visibility with the MD, meeting at the head office, and a much deeper understanding as to where the company was going.I could see redundancies were inevitable. I was offered a role abroad by the MD, which, after discussing it with my wife, I decided to take.

Oct 2008 - Oct 2009

Senior Design Manager

Leeds, England, United Kingdom

I'd always developed and moved on in my career in the military due to my performance. Yes I was keen on personal development but I'd never chased certificates or qualifications.I was now entering my first employed role after leaving the Army and found out quickly that certificates and professional qualifications were ranked above experience. At least those at my interview could see my experience and I was offered the role at a level below with the promise that if I obtained a professional qualification they'd look at promotion. It was all I needed to know. Not only did I deliver on the projects I'd been given, mainly through improving communication between the company and their clients, but I also achieved the promotion with 9 months. Communication is the key to most challenges, problems occur when effective communication stops.

Jan 2008 - Sep 2008

Director

Blue Skies, Capture Your Potential Limited

United Kingdom

Setting up in business isn't easy. Like many others I struggled. I had a vision of where I wanted to be at the time, what I wanted to do with the company and it drove through those tough initial couple of years.Taking my love of lifelong learning and personal development it made sense to use that, I therefore created my own training consultancy company.I successfully increased the commissions of those I trained, through sharing communication and sales techniques. Also important was helping individuals to understand their motivation. Alongside this I delivered goal setting training, helping attendees to plan, measure and improve their own performance and take those skills to do the same for others and then reward improved individual performance.I was an early adopter of delivering online training and development, something I was able to bring to UW.Why did I stop? I'd just started to break even really, landed a couple of great contracts and almost overnight everything vanished with the financial crash. My wife was still unwell and did not want to go back to struggling as we did at the start. We had been just starting to pay down the loans we'd had during the first couple of years. It was a tough decision to stop and find employed work but the health of my family came first.

Nov 2005 - Jan 2008

Royal Engineer Officer

During my military career I focused on personal development of myself and others. Coaching and training my direct reports to develop them not for the role they filled but for their next role.I aimed to provide an environment that encourages all to learn new skills, to work towards achieving short, medium and long objectives. The military trains us to work to deadlines, to lead and manag large dispersed teams but when not actively filling our roles on operations the focus is on training.Through coaching and mentoring I encouraged teamwork. Adventure training and the occasional social encouraged team building. From my time in the military I've been able to take away the skills needed to manage teams, the hunger for continual learning and personal development. With lifelong learning a priority, planning is key, where do I go from here? Maintaining a vision and using that as motivation keeps me focused on the goal. These skills have proved invaluable in all my roles, especially with UW.I left the military to spend more time at home to support my wife who, during the last 3 years of my service, had been diagnosed with post natal depression. My next role would have been a deployed role, this would not have been compatible with my wife's condition at the time.
