About M. Sean Molley

I am a technology executive who can (and does) still sling code, but my contributions aren't limited to what I can do behind a keyboard. Building great software is necessary but not sufficient if you want to solve hard problems in the real world. I am an excellent communicator, presenter, and teacher (whether written, one-on-one, in small groups, or public speaking). I have also had the good fortune to play key roles in product strategy, sales, and account management. Those experiences make me a much better leader when it comes to design and engineering.Although I have spent most of my career serving the healthcare industry, I consider myself a lifelong learner and have a perpetual desire to explore new technologies, new ideas, new domains, and new perspectives. I am not a programmer who happens to solve problems: I am a problem-solver. Programming turns out to be a good way to solve a lot of problems.I am broadly a fan of the various philosophies that have come to be known collectively as "agile", but I worry that there is a cargo-cult mentality around some of these practices. I think the right mix of things like stand-ups, "scrumban", pair programming, TDD, "lean", user stories, etc. will vary from team to team and from project to project. I prefer to focus on the problems we're trying to solve (business, organizational, interpersonal) and go from there. I don't show up with something carved on a set of stone tablets. My philosophy on life and work can be summed up by this bit of Sufi wisdom: "Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment."I, for one, welcome our future machine overlords. • Georgia Governor'S Honors Program
    Mathematics Instructor
    Georgia Governor'S Honors Program 1996 - 2023
(Note: LinkedIn doesn't have a good way to show multiple nonconsecutive terms of employment in the same organization, so my seven total years of GHP teaching experience is incorrectly summarized as 27 years in this view. I didn't think it looked better to have this take up two separate and largely duplicative entries in my profile, so I left it this way. I apologize for any confusion.)I have spent seven summers (1996-2001 at Valdosta State University and 2023 at Georgia Southern University) teaching mathematics and computer science to gifted and talented high school students in the Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP). GHP is a residential summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. I also attended GHP when I was a high school student. The opportunity to give back to the program as a teacher was one of the best, most rewarding experiences of my life. Most recently, in the summer of 2023 I taught courses including number theory and cryptology, the mathematical foundations of computer science, and machine learning.

  • Sph Analytics, A Press Ganey Solution
    Chief Technology Officer
Sph Analytics, A Press Ganey Solution Apr 2018 - Aug 2021
    Alpharetta, Ga, Us
SPH Analytics offers the leading healthcare measurement and analytics platform for consumer experience and engagement. As of mid-2021, SPH has a commanding market presence that touches 92 million consumers annually, more than 70% of all health plans in the United States, and 40,000+ healthcare providers. As Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, I reported to the CEO and led the teams responsible for R&D and corporate IT, including software development, quality assurance, release engineering, end-user support, data center and network operations, disaster recovery and business continuity (including pandemic response), management information systems, interfaces, data warehousing, reporting, and business intelligence. I also served as the CISO and was responsible for the company's information security program (including HIPAA Privacy and Security, SOC, and HITRUST).When I joined in April 2018, SPH Analytics was a portfolio company of the Symphony Technology Group (https://stgpartners.com/). We grew the company both organically and through strategic M&A, and ultimately had a successful exit, including the following highlights:- In December 2018 and June 2019, respectively, SPH joined forces with Morpace Health and DSS Research, forming the nation’s largest member experience measurement and analytics firm. - In December 2020 we announced the merger of our population health division with Azara Healthcare (https://azarahealthcare.com) to operate as a standalone company.- On May 26, 2021, Press Ganey (https://pressganey.com), the national leader in health care consumer and workforce engagement, acquired SPH Analytics. Visit https://resources.sphanalytics.com/press-releases/press-ganey-acquires-sph-analytics to learn more.Following the acquisition, I worked to ensure a smooth transition of my responsibilities and helped my teams join forces with their Press Ganey counterparts, winding down my involvement with the company at the beginning of August 2021.
  • Ripple Analytics, Inc
Advisory Board Member (Chief Data Scientist)
Ripple Analytics, Inc Nov 2014 - May 2018
    New York, Ny, Us
I joined Ripple Analytics during its seed round as Chief Data Scientist in November 2014 and helped build the company's core platform and MVP, transitioning away from day-to-day responsibilities in 2016. I remained a shareholder and active participant on the company's Advisory Board through May 2018, when we completed the sale of Ripple's intellectual property and assets to a private buyer.
  • Athenahealth
    Principal Architect (Vp Engineering)
    Athenahealth Dec 2010 - Nov 2013
    Boston, Massachusetts, Us
In December 2010 I transitioned most of my day-to-day responsibilities at Anodyne to focus primarily on athenahealth's company-wide reporting and business intelligence needs. I remained responsible for Anodyne's BI product strategy and the integration of Anodyne's core technology with athenahealth's Web-based practice management, electronic health record, and patient communication services. I also worked on a number of other business intelligence initiatives for athenahealth, including financial and clinical data warehousing and analytical tools. As Principal Architect (VP Engineering) I helped engineer and launch athenaClarity, athenahealth's cloud-based analytics service for medical groups and health systems. With athenaClarity, providers, medical groups, and health systems could thrive under any reimbursement scenario, ranging from traditional fee-for-service (FFS) to shared savings and global-risk models (such as ACOs). The athenaClarity service addressed the needs of financial and operational managers as well as population and care managers. The athenaClarity team was created by combining resources and expertise from across athenahealth, and by bringing together the teams and technologies of Anodyne Health and HDS, two acquisitions made by athena to accelerate its delivery of comprehensive data analysis and workflow tools.
  • Athenahealth
Vice President, Technology, Product Strategy, And Account Management
    Athenahealth Oct 2009 - Dec 2010
    Boston, Massachusetts, Us
Following its acquisition by athenahealth in October 2009, Anodyne operated as a wholly owned subsidiary for the next several years. We continued to sell and serve clients on all financial and clinical systems, while also integrating our BI tools with athena's platform to provide best-in-class analytics. Anodyne sold its BI solutions across all major practice-management systems, including athenaCollector, the various flavors of GE/IDX (Centricity), EPIC, NextGen, Allscripts, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Misys, McKesson, and many other platforms. We developed in-depth knowledge of each system in order to deliver our services. As a result, our experience with and understanding of revenue-cycle management was broader and deeper than any other BI vendor in the healthcare industry. While continuing to guide Anodyne's overall technology and business intelligence product strategy, during our post-acquisition earn-out period I also led Anodyne's account-management team, with responsibility for a client base of over 16,000 providers in 37 states.
  • Anodyne Health
    Chief Technology Officer
    Anodyne Health Oct 2006 - Oct 2009
    Alpharetta, Ga, Us

Our technology stack included Microsoft .NET (primarily C# and ASP.NET), Adobe Flash / Flex, and a whole lot of Microsoft SQL Server. The company launched in 2003 with angel financing and completed a $5.6 million Series A funding round in late September of 2006. Immediately following that initial VC investment, I was brought on as CTO to lead Anodyne's technology efforts, including hiring the entire IT team, rebuilding and updating the company's flagship BI software, and bringing additional BI solutions to market. Anodyne's VC investors included Frontier Capital (Charlotte, NC) and Brook Venture Partners (Boston, MA) along with the Small Enterprise Growth Fund (Brunswick, ME).Anodyne Health Partners was acquired by athenahealth (ATHN) in October 2009. The business intelligence division became a wholly owned subsidiary of athenahealth and continued to do business under the Anodyne name for several years. Us
Vice President and Business Intelligence Architect for Per-Se Technologies (which was called Medaphis when I joined the company), a leading US provider of revenue-cycle management solutions and software to physicians, hospitals, and pharmacies. Beginning in 1997 I worked as a software developer in the Billing Compliance unit of the company's Physician Services division, developing internal and external reporting and analysis tools, with a particular focus on our industry-leading deployment of the IBM Fraud and Abuse Management System (FAMS) for technology-based monitoring and data mining of healthcare claims, medical coding, and reimbursement. From 2002 I served as Director and from 2004 as Vice President for the company-wide business intelligence and data warehousing function, leading a number of software and database development and process-improvement projects. From 2004-2006, I worked with Business Objects and IBM DB2 to deploy web-based reporting, dashboards, ad-hoc reporting, and report-generation capabilities to internal and external clients. I also worked with Oracle, Cognos, and a variety of other databases, programming languages, and reporting/analysis tools.Per-Se Technologies acquired NDCHealth in January 2006 and was subsequently acquired by McKesson (MCK) in November 2006.
