No Inheritance or Wealth taxes for NHR.5. Enjoy tax exemption for Irish sourced and taxed income as Ireland has a Double Tax Agreement (DTA) with Portugal.A short case study as an example the benefits and steps involved. An Irish resident couple in their 60s where the wife has a pre-retirement pension of €2M, a rental property valued at €700K and €1M in a non-pension diversified portfolio. The process could be to rent a property in Portugal on 12-month lease. Become Portuguese NHR.o Move the pre-retirement pension assets to being Malta situ. If the pension benefits were taken in RoI, she would receive 25% “tax efficient” cash or €440K, i.e. €500K net of standard income tax of €60K. Contrast with the Malta Option, 30% is receivable as tax fee lump sum, i.e. €600K is received tax free. If in RoI,the balance of the monies, i.e. €1.5M are invested in an ARF, withdrawals from the ARF are the subject to marginal income tax and USC (approx. 50%). Withdrawals from pensions in Portugal are taxed 10% income tax, when NHR.o The Irish situ rental properties continue to be subject to Irish taxes and are exempt from tax in Portugal.o Move Irish situ diversified portfolio into a life insurance wrapper, approved by the Portuguese tax authorities. The objective is to reduce the longer-term tax payable on their portfolio. The longer monies are held in the life insurance wrapper the better the tax benefits. For NHR tax payers, the following tax regime applies: Effective Years policytax rates is held 28% 5 years or < 22.4% >5 years < 8 years 11.2% > 8 years Show less
