My daughter was two and a half years old. My son was about to have his first birthday. Life was flying by fast. I was working seventy hours a week. My children would be grown and out of the house in no time. So I left the flower business and my teacher wife (teacher of the year for the Houston Unified School district two years before we met) left the classroom and we opened a boutique preschool so that we could be with our children full time until they were both in kindergarten. We ran the business together, and she brought her early childhood curriculum to all the children under our care. We had a full house plus a waiting list with nine families on it before we even opened. This was the period when I started to write. And once that happened, there was no going back.

Rainbows was a high traffic, high volume European bucket-style flower shop in the busy port city of Long Beach, California. We bought our flowers farm direct or from international auctions. As the shop's rose buyer, I had an import schedule of over 5,000 roses each week.
