I’ve been a reporter and editor since 1975, having worked for the Salem Evening News, Associated Press, the Gloucester Daily Times and, for the past 30 years, the Boston Globe, New England’s largest newspaper. At the Globe, I have been a general assignment reporter, an enterprise reporter, the federal court reporter, an investigative reporter, casino report and consumer advocate reporter. In the mid1990s, I was the Globe’s city editor, responsible for supervising a large staff. During my first four years at the Globe, I earned an honors law degree attending Suffolk University Law School in the evening division. I admitted to practice law. As an investigative reporter, I was recognized as a Finalist for the national Goldsmith Investigative Reporting Prize by Harvard University in 2009 for stories documenting abuses of the public pension system by elected state and local officials. I have also focused on abuses in the multibillion-dollar Big Dig highway and tunnel construction project, the looting of a public housing program by an its executive director, and the state’s mismanagement of some of its most lucrative contracts. In 1999-2000, I was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University. I have been an adjunct journalism professor at Emerson College, the University of Massachusetts-Boston and Tufts University, teaching investigative reporting, multi-media reporting and the role of the news media in a master’s degree program in public administration. I designed an introduction to journalism course for Suffolk University in 2008 and have taught it to more than 800 students since then. In 2012, Suffolk University’s Department of Communications and Journalism recognized me “for outstanding contributions to the field of journalism.”
