About Sean Rafajko, Phd

Sean is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Supervisor at Illinois Behavioral Health Group in Chicago and the North Suburbs, focusing on providing psychotherapy and psychological assessment to youth, adolescents, and adults. Originally from Sparta, Wisconsin, he attended University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, double majoring in Psychology and German Studies, graduating with honors. He also studied abroad for a semester at J.W. Goethe Universität in Frankfurt a.M., Germany. While completing his Bachelor’s degree and for a year afterwards, Sean gained clinical experience working with at-risk and developmentally disabled youth, as well as in community-based mental health working with adults with serious mental illness. These experiences drove Sean’s research interests, focusing on community integration as a protective factor and outcome for individuals with a variety of conditions. He completed his graduate studies (M.S. and Ph.D.) at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL, under the supervision of Dr. Nicole Ditchman. His master’s degree focused on how people’s cultural attitudes relate to their attitudes towards people with intellectual disability. His dissertation focused on the experiences of sense of community and virtual community for people with autism spectrum conditions. Sean completed his pre-doctoral internship at Regional Health Systems, a large network of federally qualified health centers in Northwest Indiana, conducting psychotherapy, assessment, and rotations in primary care and inpatient units. He completed his postdoctoral experience at Gersten Center for Behavioral Health (now Illinois Behavioral Health Group). Sean also completed two pre-doctoral therapy practica with emphases on adolescents and transition age populations, as well as a pediatric neuropsychology assessment practicum. Additionally, while in graduate school, Sean taught undergraduate classes and served as a neuropsychology technician, an applied behavior analysis therapist, Chicago Public Schools selective enrollment testing supervisor and examiner, and as an intake clinician for a Chicago psychiatric hospital, in addition to several other positions working with individuals with a wide variety of needs.​Outside of his work, Sean enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, doing projects on his house, craft beer, and enjoying what Chicago has to offer.
