I lead all central teams in advancement including a total of 60 professionals covering regional major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, and the family giving program. In addition I partner with Athletics and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). In my first two years with my team at SU we have rebuilt the team and nearly doubled Syracuse University's Annual Fund; our Athletics Fundraising team had a wholesale change and increased fundraising in FY18; the IVMF continues to grow and lead the university in fundraising, nearing completion of the $62 million NVRC project; and the Parents Program, Regional Major Gifts team, and Planned Giving teams are all realigned in a more effective hybrid model and positioned to help us exceed the FY19 goals. I am happy with our progress under Matt ter Molen's leadership with SU fundraising going from $100 million FY16; $125 million in FY17; and $150 million in FY18.

Johnson raised $22.5 million in new gifts and commitments in FY15, and exceeded $25 million in FY16, bringing its campaign total to $192.5 million. Transformed the development and communications culture of a unique, science-based unit of Cornell University into a high-performing fundraising team able to be the primary funding source for the Lab’s growth into the future. Hired and managed a team that grew from 5 to 12 staff members covering all fundraising from direct response, mid-level programs, major and principal gifts, to events, planned giving, and foundation relations. Increased the average annual rate of new gifts and commitments to the Lab from $6 million to $15 million+. Created, branded and leading the $125 million Discover Campaign which finished at $158 million.The Discover Case Statement won a CASE award for best campaign case statement in 2012. Managed a Major Gifts portfolio of donors and secured the highest gift ever given to the Lab $17 million along with many other six, seven, and eight-figure gifts. Created a professionally managed, national Direct Response program. In campaign the Lab processed over 466,000 gifts from 134,000 donors, while growing our active file from 27,000 to over 95,000. On track to reach goal of exceeding 100,000 donors in 2016 while continually increasing net revenue from the program. 98% of Lab donors previously unaffiliated with Cornell. Managed an external Creative Services vendor to create entirely new and professional direct mail programs for acquisition, renewals and appeals with over 2 million mail pieces. Member loyalty very high with renewal rate at 75% overall and over 85% for 2+ YOF. Created a very successful mid-level donor program (the ‘Golden-winged Society) to build a pipeline for major gifts. This has grown from 210 people in these levels to well over 1000. Exceptional growth despite significant challenges during this period including decrease in traditional research funding. recession, managed university relations, brand definition and management, and competition with a national bird organization.
