About Sean Snyders

I am a dynamic senior engineering leader with over 20 years of experience in various roles within research, startups, medium, and large organisations.I am a both a divergent and convergent creative thinker and leverage that to drive innovation and strategic outcomes. I am passionate about the right approach - building from the ground up or collaboration and partnering. My approach integrates deep research and creative exploration with a disciplined focus on transforming ideas into actionable solutions. I foster environments where collaboration and diversity flourish, mentoring and directing teams toward co-created success.I have contributed to several domains: CAD/CAM, visualisation and simulation in engineering disciplines; world-first technological feats in VFX for films like Oscar awarded “Avatar”, “The Hobbit”, “Planet of the Apes”, and others; owned, innovated, developed and sold hardware products to the film industry; as well as being collaborative and scrappy raising funding or supporting acquisition due diligence as part of startups.Interoperability and standards is something that underpins my beliefs in collaboration for the greater good, and I represent on organisations like buildingSMART International and the Alliance for OpenUSD, as well as building industry partnerships to support that belief.Specialising in AI and Neural Networks, I received my Master’s degree in Computer Science summa cum laude from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa with several peer reviewed international publications.

(https://forums.sketchup.com/t/introducing-a-new-kind-of-sketchup-object-live-components/139815/1)Instigated and collaborated in several integrations of the computational design platform in cross-divisional projects within Trimble, furthering innovation collaboration.Integrated the platform with the Trimble ecosystem on various fronts like authorisation, backend data storage, etc.Championed infrastructure-as-code by supporting the development of an AWS cloud service stack for our .Net Core computational design engine using AWS CloudFormation templates and a plethora of AWS technologies. This enabled consistent and reproducible deployments and unlocked CI/CD workflows.Designed and implemented an innovative compute scaling strategy to leverage the intricacies of the stateful computational design engine and its communication via websockets. This leveraged several technologies on different levels in the cloud stack, effectively providing compute scaling, session sharing, session management and security, etc.Initiated and developed a client-side SDK in Js and .Net Core to expose and ease the use of the computational design cloud service platform. Documented the SDK via an innovative custom developed “live” web application using the cloud service through the same Js SDK itself and where code snippets can be executed and the resultant 3D geometry seen as code is executed.Managed devops aspects for the platform like CI/CD using Bamboo, etc. Show less

MatterMachine was utilising concepts from the visual effects industry and applying that to architectural and design industries. Leveraging my background in CAD/CAM and the visual effects industry, I led the technological development with several forays into possible business ventures, building integrations and showcases with the likes of SketchUp (Trimble), Tekla Structures (Trimble), IKEA Communications, Siemens Next 47 via integration of Siemens Parasolid geometry kernel, and others. This culminated in the acquisition of MatterMachine by Trimble in 2017 championed by their Architecture and Design division (SketchUp). I was intimately involved in the fostering of the relationship, presentations, and the due diligence process.I injected best-practices into the development processes; mentoring and evangelising core concepts, establishing testing methodologies, as well as implementing toolchains to support those concepts.I re-architected the core computational design engine to be a pure service, removing its dependency from the Unity engine, thus enabling more innovative uses of the engine itself. Utilising websockets and an innovative partial state update algorithm, we achieved fast client geometry updates in near-time.I migrated it to .Net Core for cross platform support, with the vision of running it as a cloud service, bolstering the computational design as-a-service angle.
