As employee #3, I was responsible for SoundCloud's initial world class product and distributed system designs, filled with technical tradeoffs and rapid user acquisition.When SoundCloud was created, there weren't many companies offering pre-built software services. In order to release a successful product, I built many of SoundCloud's software systems from scratch.Organizational accomplishments:- Worked closely with technical leaders from other companies like Dropbox, Facebook, and Etsy to shape SoundCloud's architecture.- Instilled DevOps and continuous improvement principles throughout the organization by promoting knowledge sharing and conducting blameless postmortems.Product accomplishments:- A payment and invoice processing system that handled recurring payments for multiple plans, available right from the launch.- The ability to upload, transcode, store and deliver media in real-time, supporting huge amounts of user-generated content.- A personalized feed that shows real-time updates on new uploads, likes, and reposts from people a user follows.- Full-text search that updates in real-time.- Image thumbnail management that optimizes page load times.- Real-time engagement statistics dashboards that are customized for each customer.Technical accomplishments:- Automated infrastructure as code with Chef.- Moved from a managed to on-premises data center with minimal downtime for reduced costs.- Scaled the Ruby on Rails application by using advanced queue theory for asynchronous processing and load balancing with HAProxy and RabbitMQ.Business accomplishments:- Early adopter of AWS in 2008, recognizing the cost benefits of using variable cloud based storage and compute for media processing and delivery.- Made strategic decisions about whether to build or buy technology, particularly when it came to primary costs like networking.- Introduced processes for site availability, including observability and incident response.

Superchannel.org revealed how global streaming media can be accessible to local communities across the globe.
