Most web companies have a single problem, serving their web pages. Loggly takes users logs, and allows them to be search and analyzed. Our problem is a lot bigger then most, because the two sides fight against each other. The more data we take in, the harder it is to search. We have to strive for a 99.9999% uptime guarantee for the incoming data, because people don't want their logs lost. Finally, something challenging.

Improved search re-index frequency from 2 weeks to 1 day. Sent 15 billion emails. Replaced a hadoop/pig implementation that took 2 days on 20 boxes with a c++ bitmask that took 15 minutes on 1 box. Etc.

Created successful e-commerce website from scratch using html, vb, excel, c++, php, java, and javascript. Automated integration with paypal, incoming and outgoing email, google adwords, looksmart listings, findwhat, overture, half.com, amazon, ebay turbolister, froogle, adsense, commission junction. Created agent system for automated discovery of valuable items on ebay and display on the website. Created multiple link farms to successfully generate traffic and earn revenue thru concept targeted advertising and affiliate conversions from ebay and other commission junction (cj.com) affilates. Contracted with multiple local and overseas engineers to design components to specification. Integrated customized phpbb implementation. Responsible for all search infrastructure for delivery of completed indexes to the front end application.Designed web crawling architecture capable of retrieving indexing 500 million pages per month using a cluster of 20 linux boxes with minimal administration.Designed distributed indexing software allowing multiple simultaneous index and crawl groups to be processed independently but use all available resources in a controlled fashion. Designed intelligent automated pattern matching software to control, promote and block URLs and Domains within the crawl based on the retrieved page content. Worked with production teams to implement stand alone servers for indexing content of client sites on a daily basis. Designed extremely high speed concept indexing software for mapping web and internal content against one million term medical taxonomy.Designed duplicate content recognition software for minimizing amount of data in index and to increase precision.

Completely conceptualized, architechted, authored, designed, prototyped, qa'd and productionalized a search engine to index ebay's auction listings daily on a single dual cpu linux box with 2gb ram. Integrated multiple systems to determine conversion rate per queryword. Worked on original directory search engine, implemented stemming, tfidf, subcategory search with btrees and bitmaps. Created much if not most of the master cgi program which served as the presentation and data serving layer at looksmart.com for 5 years. Architechted designed and implemented "Thousand Hierarchies" allowing unlimited root nodes in the acyclic category hierarchy.
