About Sebas Van Aert
After having completed my bachelor's degree in both law and philosophy, I decided to make the switch to journalism by working as a writing editor for Univers, the independent news source of Tilburg University. With two years of working experience in my backpack, I felt it was time for a step higher up and started the two-year Erasmus Mundus Master in Journalism, Media and Globalisation. This program didn't only allow me to do a deep dive into journalism, it also provided me with a great network of excellent journalists from all over the world.I gratefully made use of their local expertise for my side project that I had started in the meantime: Crossing Cultures, a podcast that is all about getting familiar with other countries and cultures. Every episode a guest from a different country. During my masters, I got the opportunity to do an internship at the foreign desk of my favourite Dutch daily De Volkskrant. After a succesful three-month internship, during which I mostly wrote about Latin America, I kept on working for the newspaper as a news editor. As a freelance journalist, I have written mostly for de Volkskrant but also for other (international) outlets such as Euronews, The European Correspondent and Brandpunt+. While topics range from political to social and cultural issues, I generally prefer writing about media and international affairs, with Latin America, Spain and Portugal as my special areas of interest.

Freelance Writer
CurrentAs a freelance writer for de Volkskrant, I have written for the foreign desk, the news desk and the media desk.
News Editor
As an editor at the news desk I covered domestic and foreign news through news articles, interviews, reportages and feature articles.
Podcast Host
CurrentWith 'Crossing Cultures' I intend to raise cultural (self-)awareness by having in-depth conversations with people from different countries and cultures. This offers an alternative to the information provided by the conventional media and to the many persistent clichés and stereotypes on which we tend to base our knowledge about those cultures.
Freelance Journalist
CurrentAs a freelance journalist, I have contributed to Euronews, The European Correspondent, Brandpunt+, NOS Radio 1 Journaal, Tubantia, Design Museum den Bosch and Red Pers. Topics range from Dutch farmers in Denmark to persons being stigmatized for saying they are not that ambitious.
Video Host
Thomas and I made some videos in the streets of Amsterdam to ask people some thought-provoking questions.
Intern At Foreign Desk
For a period of three months, I was given the chance to join the foreign desk of the Dutch newspaper 'De Volkskrant'. I wrote news articles, analyses and reports mainly about Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
Receptionist
At Book1 Hostel in Aarhus, I worked as an allround employee, from doing receptionist work to being a bartender. Here I met a lot of cool and interesting people.
Editor
At Univers, I tried to give voice to the students of Tilburg University and to contribute to societal debates by giving scientists the opportunity to present their views on relevant topics. I also served as the university's watchdog by conducting a major research project following a package of money that was invested in the university.
Employee
I was a pallbearer, which means, among other things, that I assisted relatives in carrying the coffin at the funeral. I also wrote an article (in Dutch) about it for Univers, in which I interviewed some of my colleagues.
Intern
As an intern at Univers, I wrote my first journalistic articles on subjects including human nature, Dutch identity and, of course, love.
Waiter
As a waiter, I used to work on weekends in a café in my hometown Zundert.
