    Vedvarende Energi og Bæredygtighed; Udvikling af oxygen-assisted hydrotermisk karbonisering (oxi-HTC) til autothermisk behandling af Arla-slurries.Resume/Abstract: Alternative application and waste disposal procedures of the excessive wastewater sludge produced in the cheese, whey, and infant milk industry of the Arla diary (Nr. Vium, Denmark) has been sought due to uncertainties in its disposal. This work hypothesises that combining well-established wet oxidation (WO) with hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) could be a promising waste treatment technology, yielding an autothermal (self-heating) process, which we refer to as oxygen assisted hydrothermal carbonisation (oxi-HTC). It is hypothesised that the oxidation provides sufficient heat to render external heat sources redundant, and the desirable degradation of recalcitrant pollutants while simultaneously producing the solid fuel or hydrochar with enhancing soil carbon and soil functioning properties. In this work, the Arla sludge was oxi-HTC treated with standardized oxygen gas loadings and temperatures ranging from 175-250˚C. The influence of the gas expansion on the energy release and oxidation mechanisms was assessed and discussed. The results show that the HTC and WO does have a strong influence on the ash behaviour with various degrees of oxidation of both ashes and organics eventually questioning the common practice within the determination of fixed carbon- and ash contents of sludge hydrochar. The hydrochar characterization showed the formation of more heat resilient compounds and reduced water retention properties at higher operating conditions. The temperature proved influential on the hydrolysis, dehydration, and decarboxylation of proteins and carbohydrates at higher temperatures. The decrement in solid and liquid nitrogen contents implied a greater gaseous ammonia or NOx production. The WO proved capable of reaching COD reductions of <70%, while being dependent on temperature.
