  • Clarke Broadcasting (1450 Kvml-Am Sonora,Ca / 92.7 Kzsq-Fm Sonora,Ca / 93.5 Kkbn-Fm, Twainharte,Ca)

    Clarke Broadcasting (1450 Kvml-Am Sonora,Ca / 92.7 Kzsq-Fm Sonora,Ca / 93.5 Kkbn-Fm, Twainharte,Ca) Dec 2003 - Mar 2005
Sonora, California is a small town about a half-hour past the turnoff to Yosemite National Park. After Kansas, I graduated to small-town California, where prospecting was a founding industry (and actually still practiced by some locals, apparently). While here, I covered Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's first two State of the State addresses from Sacramento, tons of breaking wildfire coverage live on the scene, as well as the school board, city council and county supervisors meetings. Breaking weather and traffic conditions too... believe me, in mountain country like Sonora, they go together. Areas I covered which you may have heard of: Calaveras County (as in Mark Twain's Jumping Frogs story), Angels Camp, Murphys, Twain Harte, Columbia, Copperopolis, Dodge Ridge.KVML Radio won the News Station of the Year Award for 2004 by the Associated Press.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lu2Uf7GEa0

    News Director
    Ingstad Broadcasting (1420 Kuly-Am Ulysses, Ks / 106.7 Kfxx-Fm, Hugoton, Ks) Jan 2003 - Dec 2003
My first full-time news job after graduation. I _was_ the news department for a station that covers the southwest corner of Kansas. I went to the city council, county commission, and school board meetings. I covered the governor's trip to the Home Products Dinner, the weekly Chamber of Commerce Coffees, trekked to eastern Kansas for the all-state fair, and reported from the all-night walk for breast cancer (which had to be moved from the high school track to the Civic Center because of Breaking News: Severe Weather!) Eddie Ochoa was my supervisor and partner, Eric Richards and Jennifer Diaz were the board ops, and James Janda was the boss that loved us from afar, way up in Garden City KS!
  • Journal Broadcast Group (104.1 The Point Kzpt-Fm Tucson, Az)
Morning Show Producer, 'The Morning Thing' With Ryno And Rivers
Journal Broadcast Group (104.1 The Point Kzpt-Fm Tucson, Az) Sep 1999 - May 2000
My buddy Ryno from KRQ had gone across town to 104.1 The Point, where he was hosting the morning show with Cathy Rivers. I still remember the phone conversation where Ryno singlehandedly convinced me to move from Tempe back to Tucson and produce the show with him. The deal was I was also going to finish up school at the U of A in Tucson. The show worked, for a while, but the heritage station wasn't really beatable, so the show dissolved and I finished up school, as planned, graduating in 2002.Here's a clip from just before Thanksgiving 99:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1JslrbUtBc
  • Arizona State Radio (Kasr 1260-Am Tempe, Az)
    News Anchor, Show Producer
Arizona State Radio (Kasr 1260-Am Tempe, Az) Jan 1997 - Jan 1999
Arizona State University Radio, Tempe, Arizona
I'm not sure they knew what to make of me at Arizona State. Fortunately, it was an alternative station so most people were open minded. I took some ribbing from the sports talk show guys, but it turns out that's just what sports talk guys do.They respected my ability, though. Since I'd done the radio news thing for a few years by this time, I'd found my voice and knew how to rock the mic. Most of them were still learning, but hey, college radio is nothing, if not a blast. And I produced the Ender show, as well, and picked up another lifelong friend at the same time.Hear one of my Arizona State newscasts here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH9x4MpuPa8
  • Prism Radio Partners (790 Knst-Am, Tucson Az / 93.7 Krqq-Fm Tucson, Az / 92.9 Kwfm-Fm Tucson, Az)

    Prism Radio Partners (790 Knst-Am, Tucson Az / 93.7 Krqq-Fm Tucson, Az / 92.9 Kwfm-Fm Tucson, Az) Jan 1993 - Jan 1996
I brag about being the last American male to learn to edit using a razor blade, grease pencil, and sticky tape. My first newsroom actually had no computers at all. Electric typewriters (with erasing-backspace capability), a dot-matrix printer that was the AP wire, reel-to-reels and cart machines were my life those first three years. I interned in high school, and they hired me as weekend overnight board operator at semester's end. Eventually I began doing midafternoon reporter work as well, and I started going to city council meetings, the courtroom trials, or just live out in the field somewhere. I also started producing the night show down the hall, at top-40 station KRQ, with the DJ who became my good buddy, Ryno, and would substitute for Betsy Bruce on the Mojo & Betsy Show, as heard at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os9Q-EycEwk
