As a recent graduate from the University of Exeter, I am looking to put my education and experience to use in an internationally focused, sustainably conscious role at a company that is looking to grow and expand, whether that growth is in team size or in quality delivery for clients. I have previously worked in Uganda in the development sector, where I was required to learn and adjust to a range of roles within a small but very active company, HYT Uganda. The jobs that I took on included assisting and managing projects, negotiations, recruitment and interview lead, social media lead, building design, training, and community outreach. These roles across numerous locations, from the remote to within Bidi Bidi refugee camp taught me skills and gave me experience that are needed in any role for any company. I gained and used interpersonal and communication skills across multiple language barriers, both within the immediate team to the recruitment programmes that I assisted with and lead. I enhanced my presentation, public speaking, and negotiating skills through meetings with local chairmen, operations managers for international NGOs, and UNHCR executives. I carried out research projects, for example developing new stove systems to maximise burning efficiency while minimising firewood usage. I trained in the use of CAD tools, designing and later assisting with the construction of classrooms, water tanks, teacher’s housing, and latrines. In terms of my education, I studied International Relations at the University of Exeter. The modules I chose gave access to a wide array of perspectives on international development, culture, race, and behavioural insight. In my final year I focussed on development and refugee policy in sub-Saharan Africa. A key part of this was my dissertation, in which I analysed and critiqued the methods and practices of development, NGO and non-profits working in developing nations across the globe.
