About Sebastian Wilberforce

Experienced in administering or managing private and charitable trusts, assessing grant applications, writing and reviewing granting strategies, bequest fundraising strategies and communications for a wide range of different charitable organisations, compliance (Trusts Act 2019, AML, Privacy Act, health and safety), and business administration. I have the experience and perspective to look objectively at the way things are done and improve them. That’s why I was asked to review the administration of the Lincoln University Centennial Trust, which I improved significantly, and to set up the Lincoln University Foundation – which was my solution to a problem the University had.I qualified as a solicitor in England and enjoy using the analytical skills I learnt and to get to the heart of the matter. I am comfortable with getting an understanding of and applying a regulatory framework, and have broiad experience of this, for instance with the trusts regimes, health and safety and the privacy. I have trained trustees and staff, and presented master classes at conferences in Australia and New Zealand.I’m creative, solution focussed, with an eye for detail and the ability to think outside the square and to see where the rocks are and reduce or eliminate scope for the organisation to trip over them.I like using words and have been editor for over 20 years of a leading fundraising textbook which is used internationally and is now in its fourth edition. (My contribution to the not-for-profit sector.) It has helped raise millions of dollars for the common good. The current edition has 21 contributors, all of whom I managed to deliver to length and on time. Why so many? Originally asked to write the whole book I decided it would be more useful if it featured individuals with deep knowledge of the different aspects of fundraising, so I got them to write their own chapters. This has been my approach with every edition.During 2022 I was doing part time academic study at Canterbury University one advantage of which was to give me a greater understanding of te Ao Māori, the Māori worldview, and of multi-cultural perspectives. I bring a commercial focus to my work having co-owned and run a business for 8 years with a staff of 26 and an annual turnover in excess of $4 million, which we completely rebuilt and rebranded.
