In an attempt to fight the blight and deterioration that had plagued the Hunts Point community of the Bronx, the group known as SEBCO (South East Bronx Community Organization) was formed in the fall of 1968 under the visionary leadership of Father Louis R. Gigante. SEBCO was the very catalyst the South Bronx needed to push for building new affordable housing in the most devastated neighborhood in Country. After years of work with various agencies and funding sources, SEBCO saw the neighborhood come back to life through its efforts. SEBCO roared to life, rehabilitating thousands of units, building over 100 single family homes, dozens of Coops, and newly constructing senior and multifamily housing on vacant sites with the City of New York. The growth was amazing for the community and its residents. These mighty efforts also gave the much-needed confidence to so many other groups and developers that wanted to build and improve the community and others alike. SEBCO's great work cannot only be summarized by the number of buildings developed or projects completed, there is so much more to our history and core values. The legacy of SEBCO is securely grounded in the positive impacts on the lives of the residents that live in our properties and the staff that has dedicated their lives to service.
