As a materials scientist, I am interested in investigating the light-matter interactions in various semiconducting materials such as their ability to absorb or emit light. This research project drew inspiration from perovskite materials and used a scalable and straightforward ultrasonic spray deposition technique to deposit cesium bismuth iodide thin films for lead-free optoelectronic devices. We developed methods to avoid the use of toxic solvents, which are commonly employed in the processing of perovskite materials. By using various characterization techniques, we thoroughly examined the properties of these thin films and identified their potential for use in various heterojunction devices, such as solar cells and self-powered photodetectors. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations using VASP code are combined with experimental methods to fully understand the behavior of electrons in the material and to predict its optical properties. Additionally, we proposed a solution-engineering approach for the in-situ growth of chalcogenide nanorods in spray-deposited perovskite films. This technique aims to enhance carrier collection and thereby improve the photodetection capabilities of such absorber thin films.

Fabricated and analyzed ZnO thin films and nanorods for potential use in transparent conducting oxide applications. Specifically, we implemented Al doping and post-deposition thermal treatments to enhance the conductivity and control transparency of the ZnO thin films. Additionally, we used a chemical method to grow vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on the seed layers deposited through spray pyrolysis. This method is particularly useful in controlling the size, shape, and orientation of nanorods.Through the fabrication of homojunction diodes and subsequent analysis of their properties, we gained valuable insights into the potential of ZnO thin films and nanorods for electronic and optoelectronic device applications.
