About Sebastian Öhman

I am a curious and analytical scientist with a strong will to understand and exchange knowledge with others. During my PhD studies, I researched novel synthesis routes to make refractory ceramic coatings at significantly reduced temperatures and timescales. To achieve this goal, I built a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) reactor that combined several metal-organic reactants simultaneously. My main research findings have, among many things, provided new fundamental knowledge about the Al–Ti–O system and demonstrated ways to circumvent energetic constraints by allowing nucleation – a kinetic phenomenon – to control the syntheses. From my PhD and prior work experiences, I have gained deepened knowledge about the structure-property relationship of oxide-based materials and also their wear behaviour. For instance, by using various analytical techniques and my strong deduction skills, I developed a theoretical model explaining the wear of alumina-coated cutting tools, which helped to further improve the tools' wear resistance.Personally, I am constantly eager to acquire new knowledge and try different approaches in teams of others. I am solution-oriented, and believe that persistence and an interdisciplinary mindset are crucial in tackling any technological problem, no matter how daunting it may seem. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have also developed my communication skills through involvement in extracurricular activities, including several years of experience as a sports referee.During my free time, I enjoy road cycling, running, and swimming, often in various combinations thereof.

Using various analytical techniques and knowledge from many different scientific areas, I deduced the detrimental influence of calcium on the wear of alumina-based coatings. As part of my master thesis at the company (see below), I developed an atomistic model explaining the wear behaviour on a fundamental scale, which contributed to improving the coatings’ wear resistance further.

AES-results demonstrated that a significant amount of calcium was present inside the worn alumina coating layer. This suggests that a reaction between the layer and the calcium-containing inclusions in the steel can occur, thus suggesting for a chemical wear mechanism. In addition, a new ground-breaking wear model has been proposed describing the wear of the alumina coating on an atomic scale. In this model, it is emphasised that the sliding of hard inclusions in the steel might trigger the activation of pyramidal slip systems in the textured alumina coating. This causes a local nano-crystallisation/amorphisation, which is believed to further facilitate the wear of the alumina coating on these tools. Show less
