About Tyson Seburn

◾ I am a director of the International Programs department at the University of Toronto and tutor for Trinity DipTESOL program at Oxford TEFL Barcelona. I've extensively volunteered on local (TESL Toronto) and international (IATEFL) teacher association committees. As much as I can, I also do freelance writing and consulting on inclusive practices, with a focus on 2SLGBTQIA+ representation. ◾ My approach to ELT policy, pedagogy, and materials centres these principles:♾️ reality has variety, 🌈 representation matters, and 🔲 power distribution includes folx who need it.My personal and professional experiences have led me to be particularly interested in queer and racialised experiences in ELT, and thus ways to change our practices and materials as a result. I aim to create and amplify opportunity for stronger diversity and help others do so. I learn; I make mistakes; I acknowledge them; I modify. I hope this exemplifies development for everyone, too. This will always be true.I've written two very different books regarding English language teaching, of both I'm equally proud:📘 How to Write Inclusive Materials (2021) bit.ly/howtoinclusive📕 Academic Reading Circles (2015) bit.ly/arc-bookPlease contact me via tbseburn@gmail.com or DM for consultation and writing projects.🤗 Linkedin, FB & Youtube - Tyson Seburn / 4CinELT🤗 Everywhere else - @seburntDownload Curriculum Vitae here: https://bit.ly/4ey4bNg

Most broadly I assist in the strategic and pedagogic decisions for programs aimed specifically at international students and housed at New College. More specifically, I collaborate on the cohesion of all curricula, assist with operational decisions, and support the teachers of within the International Foundation Program. This two-term undergraduate program prepares conditionally accepted international students for the academic rigour and culturally-defined expectations of university study in Canada. During the summer months, I oversee and support teachers and students in more intensive 6-week versions of these courses as well as language learning programming for non-UofT students in youth, Pre-University, and adult divisions.
  • University Of Toronto - New College
    Academic Director [Acting]
University Of Toronto - New College Aug 2022 - May 2023
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
I was on transfer to this role within the International Programs department, while the AD was on leave. During this full academic year, our program underwent a Program Review commissioned by the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts & Science. This primarily involved two initial components: a self-study report regarding the history, successes, and challenges we have undergone during our EAP program's existence through data we provided, data provided by the Faculty, and feedback from the Dean's office; and a full-day virtual site visit by three external scholars and various stakeholders of our program.A second major change in our academic program during this year was being the first full-year after the unionisation of the instructional staff. This new context included a transition for everyone in context, expectations, and governing rules for managerial and instructional staff. Navigating this transition brought both clarity and challenges for us all in our growth.Third, our program headed into an era where equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) became foremost discussion point and plan for execution in formal policy and professional development.

4CinELT began as a blog and it's still that, but it's also become the unofficial banner under which I do most of my freelance work. For 12 years, I've freely shared content for and commented on various sectors of ELT: General English, English for Academic Purposes, Teacher Training. I've managed several self-started projects for our community, including the ELT Event Calendar (a collated space for all world-wide ELT events that ran for 5 years), #tleap discussion group (a regular chat group for teachers of academic English which is still going without me now), and Design.ed (my occasional design work for education projects). Most recently, 4CinELT (fourc.ca) and more specifically The Path (path.fourc.ca) have become the umbrella under which I consult on ELT policies and materials through my work on diversity, representation, and inclusion.
