Do you need technical copywriting, website content, magazine features, newsletters and white papers in the printing, photographic and graphic arts sectors? I can do it for you in plain English at reasonable rates. I'm pretty good with a camera and Photoshop too. That image at the top, a 180 deg panorama of a Kodak Prosper 5000 at Howard Hunt, is one of mine. Specialities: technical journalism, research and copywriting plus hands-on reviews, covering digital printing (commercial, packaging and wide format), pre-press, image editing, design and production software, web to print, MIS, VDP, colour management, finishing. Now exploring the crossover between 2D and 3D printing, plus immersive and 3D photography.Recent projects:I often write technical features for PrintWeek and Digital Printer magazines, including regular "Me & My Machine" case studies and "Star Product" tech pages (link below) for PrintWeek. I've written longer technical features for the FESPA website over the years, example link below. For PrintWeek's 60th anniversary in 2018 I wrote a sweeping 'Milestones in Print' history of print (link below), covering significant people and developments ranging from prehistory up to the 21st Century. I've also written histories of Koenig & Bauer (200th anniversary) and Esko (100th anniversary via its Purup foundations). Since late 2018 I've been writing a monthly series called Best of British for PrintWeek, profiling companies that make hardware and software for the printing sector on British soil. See example link on FFEI below.Recent new technologies examined have included "Industrie 4.0" in the printing sector, direct-to-shape digital printing, 3D printing, inkjet printheads and controllers, industrial print processes and 10 & 25 year predictions of print developments. I'm currently researching digitally printed and finished carton production. Sideline interests include extracting 3D information from photography (photogrammetry) and 19th and 20th Century print technology histories. In 2013 I wrote "Talking Heads," a 40 page illustrated book with plain English introduction to printhead technology and maintenance for wide format inkjets, with a source list of heads as fitted to different printer makes. This was sponsored by DigiPrint Supplies and given away at FESPA 2013.I've produced White Papers on Colour Management and Screening for digital presses.

Wendover NewsWendover News Cic Mar 2023 - PresentWendover, UkSince early 2023 I've been volunteering with Wendover News, a local monthly community newspaper. I do some writing, photography and layout/production, with a small team of other volunteers. Unlike many UK local magazines that are full of advertorial, we do have real news and coverage of local issues and events. The HS2 railway construction is currently ripping up the landscape next to our small town, so there's plenty to cover there!

FreelanceGraphic Arts Journalist Mar 1993 - PresentWendover, UkI write magazine features, newsletters, white papers, reports, books and technical analyses of the latest developments in the printing, photographic and graphic arts sectors. Regular magazine customers include PrintWeek & Digital Printer, plus the FESPA website. Since 2018 I've written most of the Printweek "Best of British" series of in-depth profiles of UK based manufacturers and software developers in the printing sector. I've contributed to FlexoTech, Digital Print for Corrugated and Folding Carton Industries magazines. I also handle rather more anonymous copywriting for companies that need to explain complex technical concepts in plain English. With a formal background in printing via college and industry, I now have 35+ years' experience in trade journalism, specialising in high tech developments, especially digital image capture, processing, communications and printing. I can and do write about any print process and time period from Gutenberg's 1450s letterpress onward, but the majority of what I cover today is digital printing, whether for high speed commercial or large format sign, display and industrial applications.

EditorDigital Printer Magazine Mar 2008 - Dec 2012Self-employed technical journalist and photographer. Most of my time was spent writing and editing Digital Printer, covering developments in digital print for commercial printers.
-
EditorImage Reports Magazine Apr 2007 - Feb 2008A monthly trade magazine for which I freelanced from issue 1 in 1994 to early 2007 when I was appointed editor. Over its first decade it progressed from a general-purpose computer graphics title to become a a specialist in wide format digital signage printers, but in my time it was broadened out again to cover all commercial digital print systems and related topics.
-
Technical AuthorFreelance Feb 1993 - Mar 2007Working for PrintWeek, Digit/Digital Arts, MacWorld UK, The Seybold Report on Publishing Systems, Electronic Imaging, Image Reports, PrePress News, British Journal of Photography, Professional Photographer, What Digital Camera, Demon Internet, Army recruitment magazine, plus numerous anonymous technical press releases and reports for PR & marketing operations.
-
ContributorPrintweek 1993 - 2007After leaving XYZ I continued to act as a freelance technical contributor for Haymarket's weekly print magazine. I mainly handled pre-press and digital aspects for the Products of the Week reviews, plus extensive Ipex and drupa preview work, technical forecasts and overviews, historical articles, and various columns over the years.
-
Joint EditorPrepress News Oct 1995 - Jun 1996A monthly trade magazine that I briefly freelance-edited, after a couple of years as a freelance contributor. When the publisher decided that payment was optional, I moved on.
-
EditorXyz Magazine 1990 - 1993I launched this for Haymarket and edited it for three years, with two other full-time writers and a designer. It was a pioneering monthly magazine that sought to explain the creative potential of the then-new computer technologies to designers, ad agencies and publishers. It showed real-world work, interviewed users and developers, and explained the concepts, systems and technologies in plain English. This was pre-WWW, so most of the topics were print-related.
-
EditorNew In Printing Apr 1988 - Dec 1989I relaunched this monthly products-led trade magazine for Haymarket Publishing and within a year it had the highest ad sales of its sector. This led to greater things within two years, with the launch of XYZ magazine within Haymarket.
-
EditorGraphic Repro Magazine Sep 1986 - Mar 1988Trade magazine covering the then-new digital pre-press and composition technologies for the printing industry. This was my first full time editing role. Great people, but after 18 months I was poached back to Haymarket.
-
Production EditorApricot User Mar 1985 - May 1986Central LondonA short lived but lively and beautifully designed title concentrating on the innovative MS-DOS (but not PC-compatible) small business computers built in Scotland by Apricot. It was owned by VNU. I enjoyed working there but was then persuaded to go back into the print sector...
-
Production Editor, Then Features EditorLithoweek Jun 1983 - Feb 1985Teddington, UkThe start of an association with LithoWeek (later renamed PrintWeek) that's continued with some interruptions ever since. I left to learn more about computers, though not before covering the announcements of the Apple Macintosh and the first Desktop Publishing System, that went on to revolutionise pre-media and print during the next decade.
-
Reporter, Then Features EditorPrinting World Jul 1981 - Jun 1983Fleet Street, London (1981-82) Tonbridge, Kent (1983)My first job in journalism. Fortunately this was not only in Fleet Street when that still meant something, but I had a great editor, Roy Coxhead, who taught me how to write clearly and objectively. Sadly that's almost a defect in these days of instant-opinion social media.
-
EstimatorLithopak Jul 1980 - May 1981Hazel Grove, Greater Manchester, UkMy first job out of print college, at a medium sized carton packaging printer. Unfortunately it coincided with a recession and so I was soon redundant again. But not before I'd suggested to the chief estimator that maybe a computer could be programmed to do the work that we did with calculators and grid-ruled paper. "Nay lad, you'd lose the personal touch," he said :-)
