As an assistant toddler and infant teacher, I assist the lead teacher to create developmentally-appropriate lesson plans for children ages 1-5. I am responsible for providing physical, social, emotional, and cognitive support and stimulation for a classroom of 13 children. By providing a safe space for the children to learn and grow, I help them to reach developmental milestones.

In this role, I shadow two developmental specialists to provide family education and support during well-child visits. This support can include breastfeeding advice or techniques, the introduction of solid foods, behavioral concerns, preschool enrollment, or help with early intervention referrals. As an intern I also helped to develop an instrument to refer patients to the Parents as Teachers program by integrating clinical impressions with evidence-based diagnostic tools. The Parents as Teachers program is a home-based program which provides parents with tools and advice so that they can best support the unique needs of their child. As an intern, I helped to develop a tool to better identify the families who could benefit from this approach in order to proactively support families. Finally, I aggregated survey data to evaluate participant satisfaction with the Parents as Teachers home visiting program. This was done as part of an ongoing evaluative process to ensure that we are best meeting the needs of our families. I also had the opportunity to participate in workshops and other trainings, including EPIC training and a workshop on understanding cultural diversity and disparities in the healthcare system

As a graduate teaching assistant in the kindergarten classroom, I created an inclusive learning environment for a class of 17 students. To do so, I assisted the head teacher to develop a curriculum that incorporates and enhances students’ interests. I was also responsible for fostering productive and collaborative relationships with colleagues and families to provide holistic support to every child.

I volunteered under the supervision of a Child Life Specialist in a variety of inpatient settings, including the Art Cart, Cardiac Unit, NICU, MSICU, and Infant/Toddler Surgical Unit as well as special programming through the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

As a City Year member, I served as a role model, near-peer, and tutor in a fourth grade classroom at the Curley K-8 School. I targeted attendance, behavior, and coursework to help students reach tenth grade on track and on time. To do so, I intentionally cultivated relationships with my students in order to understand their learning needs and to holistically support their development. I was also responsible for coordinating and overseeing the extended day program for grades three through five. In this capacity, I was responsible for a team of 8 City Year members in order to provide academic and enrichment support to our students.
