Having one of the top connection scores for Starbucks in the region, I have delighted in making connections with guests from day one coming back to this work. I find making drinks to be a supremely fulfilling exercise every step of the way. Most especially seeing people's faces when I put out a meticulously-crafted Frappuccino, or seeing them appreciate the simple pleasure of an Espresso Con Panna. We have people from all around the world visit with Michigan State a bus route away and I can't but love the sheer volume of personalities, accents, et al. Also, giving a kid a cake pop or hot chocolate makes me feel like the guy from the beginning of the Gene Wilder "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Coding might be the greatest satisfaction for me intellectually, but being a barista is an act of constant creation. Similar to my martial art of choice, Judo, it's the moment you are in that matters and builds community and relationships, when you can make people's desires come true.Meanwhile, I have completed two certificates for IT-related programs through Target, one from eCornell and the other from Purdue Global. But at the moment I am only studying to maintain my skills, because for now I can put on the show that is a seasoned barista and still enjoy it. People might not expect someone to be passionate about making drinks, but when you can move fluidly between stations, help coworkers, ensure quality, and still connect with each customer it does tend to impress.
