About See Cheung

See Cheung is an artist, filmmaker, and educator who collaborates with journalists, academics, and local communities to highlight the inequities and lived experiences of marginalised groups. Using observational documentary, experimental sound, and innovative editing techniques, she leverages film as a tool to explore the boundaries of contemporary dis/connections. A selection of her films include: - Interview with Lennart (2016), a conversation with German ultra-right politicians, produced with writer and journalist Richard Cooke for SBS Public Broadcasters. - The Dutch Window (2017), a discussion on the viability of proportional representation with Dutch politicians, in collaboration with writer and broadcaster Morgan Quaintance.- Inequalities of BAME Patients Cancer Care Study (2018-19), which examines the inequities faced by BAME patients undergoing cancer care, in partnership with NHS England and brap Human Rights -- Eviction in Shenzhen (2019-ongoing), a long-term study on the gentrification of her father's ancestral village - Work in Progress (2021-22), a project celebrating independent shopkeepers in the rapidly gentrifying area of Rotterdam Zuid, commissioned by Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.Her upcoming film, a collaboration with her collective Sunday, will explore the 40-year legacy of the Camden Chinese Community Centre. This project is commissioned by Camden Borough Council and Platform Asia. Currently, See is a Research Lecturer and educator for the Social Practice Minor at Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. As a freelancer, she has worked as Director of Photography for Beast (2022) by Aileen Yeh, and as a videographer and photographer for institutions like Het Nieuwe Instituut and Witte de With Contemporary Art (now Melly). She is a member of the ESEA artist collective Sunday (formerly Rising Buns).

    Commissioned by the Global Poverty Project & Comic Relief, for the Enough Food IF Campaign. My role was to develop and deliver the production of an art installation which would communicate global hunger issues to London commuters. This campaign was to feature as 1 of 5 events, in the lead-up to the G8 Summit (2013). Housed within a 100m space in Victoria St, the installation demonstrated the four IF's; tax evasion, aid, transparency and land.

    Invited by the East London multi-use venue 'Oval Space', to run their first arts programme. As Head of Arts I developed the concept for the programme and procured artists for commissions. I produced the shows, organised budgets, designed the graphics and marketed the shows. The exhibitions were housed within the Shutter Space and showcased emerging talents including Connor Linskey, Tim Steer, Sidsel Christensen, Aki Ilomaki and Jack Brindley.Oval Space initially began as a holistic endeavour to host music, arts and cinema events including rooftop dining and corporate hire. The space has been used as a filming location for Fast & Furious 6, Thom Yorke + Atom’s for Peace album launch, Gilles Peterson, Jamie XX, Dazed & Confused magazine launches, the premiere of the film ‘Seven Psychopaths’ and more.

    Jungle City & the Fabergé Big Egg hunt, were public exhibitions which raised awareness and funds for the charities Elephant Family & Action for Children. Both exhibitions were successful in meeting their goals and raised over £1 million each in funds.My role was to manage 110-220 artists (Zaha Hadid, Geri Halliwell, Where's Wally etc.) across two exhibitions and support the artists in the development and delivery of their public sculptures. This included finding painting spaces such as the British Library Depot in Islington which I secured for free in collaboration with the housing organisation Camelot. In addition, my role was to install and de-stall the sculptures on location, fix all works on site and support PR for the major press moments for the BBC and Tower Bridge shoots. Support was also given during the live auctions in the Royal Courts of Justice, London, and the Natural History Museum, Edinburgh.
