After retiring from Columbia U. Medical (Neuroscience & Immunology) I engaged community based work in HIV. Working for 5 years in Phoenix I established a Wellness Center for HIV and became the Director of an agency providing housing for the homeless with HIV/AIDS. Returning to NYC I was the Director of Pride Senior Network which focused on aging lgbt issues. After joining ACRIA (AIDS Community Research Initiative of America) in 2002, seminal Research on Older Adults with HIV (ROAH) was launched. I also supervised clinical trials for new HIV drugs at ACRIA. The research has resulted in significant media coverage (NY Times, ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, PBS), the establishment of a HIV and Aging Awareness Day, the White House Conference on HIV and Aging, and a 2013 US Senate Hearing on HIV and Aging. A data driven book (Older Adults with HIV: An In-Depth Examination of an Emerging Population) was published (2009) as have multiple journal articles. With the UK's Terence Higgins Trust ACRIA organized the first Satellites on HIV & Aging at the Vienna 2010 Int. AIDS Meetings. Multiple research efforts include those in Chicago, GMHC NYC, the UK, Canada, Uganda and South Africa. He is a member of the joint American Academy of HIV Medicine, American Geriatrics Society, ACRIA effort to describe clinical guides for the aging HIV population (www.HIV-AGE.org). Most recently he is a mentor on a NIH research effort at SUNY Downstate Medical to study the risks of older women with HIV using the NIH WIHS cohort. DirectorNational Resource Center On Aging & Hiv Jan 2019 - PresentUsaThe National Resource Center on HIV and Aging targets the growing populations of older adults living with HIV including Long Term Survivors. The Center’s goal is to inform the health choices of these older adults, together with those who provide them with needed supportive services as they age. The vetted information offered by the Center reflects the cumulative expertise of community advisors and staff from across the country. The site is dynamic, providing texts, short videos, sponsored webinars, conference summaries, slide decks, infographics, and the most current research data available. The Center, a program of GMHC, also provides an interactive National Community Map on which users can find supportive programs and conferences happening locally. This effort supports the Resource Center’s mission by enhancing interactions that result in programs that meet the needs of older persons living with HIV.
