Sema Emiroglu has worked as a New York correspondent and UN Bureau Chief for major Turkish and international news organizations, including Milliyet Turkish Daily since 1992. In addition to the freelance contributions she has made to BBC, Radio Deutsche Welle and WDR Koeln Turkish sections, she frequently appeared on CNN International as well as C-SPAN as a commentator on current affairs. Emiroglu also served as the New York / UN correspondent of CNN TURK between 1999-2001. She contributed to the CNN World Report and participated in the International Professional Training Program of CNN in Atlanta in 1999. Emiroglu has also been involved in academic aspect of world affairs. She obtained scholarships from the EU, NATO and the British Government and spoke at conferences at various US universities, including Columbia and Lehigh. She gave lectures on "Arab Spring and Social Media" at METU and TOBB-ETU in Ankara in 2012.After being appointed as the UN Bureau Chief in New York by Milliyet in 1992, Emiroglu reported on many international issues, including Iraq, Iran, Syria, Cyprus, Bosnia and the Middle East. She extensively traveled and covered various news events around the world, including Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. She traveled with the former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan to the Middle East in 1998. In 1996, Emiroglu was assigned in Istanbul as the foreign desk editor for Milliyet where she also helped launch the Turkish edition of the Wall Street Journal. Emiroglu started her career as a diplomatic correspondent in the Ankara Bureau of Milliyet in 1987 after receiving two awards from this newspaper. She is one of the handful Turkish journalists who managed to interview Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdish terror organization, PKK, while he was hiding in Syria in 1991 and co-authored a book about it. She has a passion for space and aviation and covered many aspects of the US space program as well.
