Account DirectorOgilvyone Worldwide Mar 2005 - Nov 2005New York, Ny, UsMy second Ogilvy stint – this time working on the American Express global account. One of the longest serving accounts for any agency and a lot of sway inside Ogilvy. This was global marketing at scale: providing standards, frameworks and templates for all the regions to work with, delivering proof of concept campaigns that represented best practice – most of it in acquisition, but a good amount in retention as well as onsite journeys. Again, I worked in a great team of talented, senior marketers as well as some great clients from many different countries that we had to serve. -
Email ConsultantIntercontinental Hotels Group Jun 2004 - Mar 2005Windsor, Berkshire, GbBack as a consultant on the client side – working with one of the innovators in travel eCommerce at the time – Intercontinental Hotels Group. I joined a very strong team of client side marketers focussing on different parts of Europe – an Irishman, An Irish woman, an Englishman, a German, a Frenchman, a Portuguese and an Australian. A kind of European Union of digital marketing (with a colonial visitor). We could spend what we wanted, as long as we delivered a return of more than 10 to 1 return on investment. An incredibly good discipline to be given. My role was to run the email number for Europe. We regularly smashed targets across the team and in email – did some amazing work. We had end to end control of the process and could test and drive up numbers at will. I eventually moved across to look after a sub region (North Central and Eastern Europe) – doing integrated digital marketing, as well as some partnership work. -
Account DirectorOgilvyone Worldwide Sep 2003 - Jun 2004New York, Ny, UsMy first gig in London, England. I moved straight onto the BT account and looked after email in an organisation of highly talented marketers. The numbers we were working with were huge, the costs equally so (but justified). We were in an environment where only the best was expected and you had the scope and budget to innovate. Ogilvy are very good at nurturing talent and if you were good, you were given the opportunity to shine. I saw that for myself and saw that for the people around me that I worked with. The client was uncompromising, which was a good thing. Fantastic organisation. -
Account DirectorGrey Group Jan 2000 - Jun 2003New York, Ny, UsI joined Grey part time in a team of about 5 people in the interactive department. My role was to crunch numbers from eCommerce systems and web logs – and report on it/recommend what they should be doing. This was early days in digital – particularly in Australia. I loved it – while they were paying me part time, I just stayed full time. It was what I wanted to do. They eventually just started paying me full time, because I wasn’t going to leave. We grew fast and did some fantastic work, but we were all learning as we were going. I went from an analyst in Canberra to an Account manager to an account director. I was moved to Sydney to set up the Interactive team in Grey over there – then the dot com crash happened. We grew to circa 45 people, then back down to below 10. By the time I left I had built most things that could be built, had marketed in every channel (acquisition and retention) that existed in digital at the time, had a load of firsts and had a small part in the tech bubble as well as survived the crash with a few scratches and bruises. -
Data Analytics ConsultantVarious Jun 1998 - Jan 2000Early days in my career I worked as an analyst, answering questions through statistical significance. I suppose these days I would have been called a data scientist. I loved crunching numbers, I loved big data sets, chased interesting questions and high day rates. • Juvenile Justice – Queensland Government: Looking into the causes of Juvenile delinquency and recidivism (Its got a lot to do with relationship with primary caregiver). • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia: Looking at the impact of eCommerce on Australian Trade (Unsurprisingly, Micro enterprises had the biggest opportunity to drive growth)• Department of Health, Australia: Crunching data on a Disabilities Census (data presentation in almost every format) • Attorney Generals, Australia: Various corporate surveys
