A friend of our company from one of the top software companies once shared a tale about their software firm's venture with an entertainment giant in NYC, aiming to digitize a 5,000-person marketing team still on Google Sheets. Five months in, they had an MVP. Yet, it didn’t resonate with the executives, who appeared to want to be too hands-on. After extensive refining and a year later, the test group in the UK still preferred Sheets. A developer's tweak (after speaking with a few end users) boosted adoption to 67% for just that feature, but after $10M and two years, the project was abandoned since nobody wanted to use it after all. Sadly, they realized too late that user needs had been sidelined.Meanwhile, as our friend parted ways with the entertainment giant, in sun-baked Arizona, our Techery was assisting a $500M enterprise in modernizing their Health & Wellness e-commerce platform. One day, we spotted a trend: customers with accrued points predominantly subscribed to product A, but only a fraction sporadically purchased product B. They were never using their points for anything. We proposed developing a module that would bundle the two products, allowing points to partially cover product B. Two months post-implementation, the ROI was a staggering 5,700%. ($500K in - $29M out). At our year-end corporate bash, amidst the clinks of glasses and echoes of laughter, our friend from the earlier tale approached my business partner Alex, a reflective look in his eyes.
