About Sergey Ivanov

Molecular biology and medical genetics professional with long-standing experience in human genetics and diagnostics. Versed in collaborative R&D research (target discovery, drug efficacy models, etc.) in the fast-paced environment of NCI-designated cancer centers. Collaborated with Rosetta Genomics, AstraZeneca, Plexxikon, and Ignyta. • Using molecular profiling performed annotation/curation of clinical variants, identified and validated novel clinical markers and therapeutic targets for kidney, lung, breast, head and neck cancers, mesothelioma as well as inherited kidney diseases;• Turned research concepts into new clinical tools and strategies by providing novel molecular targets and performing drug efficacy studies in vitro and on patient-derived mouse xenografts;• Reported on the role of TrkC, a neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase, in a radiation-resistant neuroinvasive cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and performed preclinical studies of Trk inhibitors developed by AstraZeneca, Plexxikon and Ignyta; • Described activation of NOTCH1 in adenoid cystic carcinoma and investigated DAPT as a mono-therapy and in combination with radiation;• Established roles of miR-31 and HAPLN1 as a tumor suppressor and oncoprotein, respectively, in mesothelioma;• Published more than 50 papers in high-impact journals such as Nature Genetics, PNAS, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Oncogene, etc;• Was funded by NIH and private foundations, awarded for best publication and acknowledged in Vanderbilt and Yale press releases

Sergey Ivanov Work Experience Details
  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center
    Staff Scientist
Vanderbilt University Medical Center Apr 2018 - Present
    Greater Nashville Area, Tn
I am working now on pancreatic cancer with the focus on exosomes, which may help early diagnostics and better understanding of how cancer cells communicate with the surrounding milieu.
  • Yale University School Of Medicine
    Research Scientist
Yale University School Of Medicine Sep 2012 - Dec 2017
    New Haven, Ct
At Yale School of Medicine, I worked as a PI to lead NIH-funded research focused on the development of novel therapies for salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), a neuroinvasive cancer resistant to radio- and chemo-therapies. Patient-derived tumor specimens were subcutaneously implanted and grown in immunodeficient mice to produce tissue for molecular studies, pre-clinical studies and cell culture production. Based on these studies, novel diagnostic and therapeutic markers were described and used to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
  • New York University
    Assistant Professor
New York University Sep 2006 - Sep 2009
    Greater New York City Area
With the goal to develop targeted therapies against mesothelioma, an asbestos-induced cancer with very poor survival, I performed CNA mapping of the mesothelioma genome in collaboration with Dr. Robert Lucito (inventor of ROMA). This study pointed at the 9p21.3 deletion as a common event linked to metastases and led to characterization of mir-31 as a novel tumor suppressor. I also established a pro-tumorigenic role for HAPLN1, an extracellular protein overexpressed in mesothelioma.
  • National Cancer Institute (Nci)
    Scientist
National Cancer Institute (Nci) Sep 1993 - Sep 2006
    Frederick, Md
Started at NCI-Frederick as a Postdoctoral Researcher and soon promoted to a Scientist position. Worked on the genetics of HIV susceptibility, mapping breast cancer-associated genes based on admixture disequilibrium, role of the VHL tumor suppressor in cancer, development mouse tumor suppressor KO models, and using RNA Differential Display (RDD) to identify novel clinical targets. Discovered a novel gene, CA12, and implicated transmembrane carbonic anhydrases CA9 and CA12 in hypoxia response in cancer (the Warburg effect) (PNAS and AJP papers accumulated >1000 citations). Generated several KO models for the human 3p21.3 genes including Cacna2d2 that encodes voltage-gated calcium channel subunit a2d2.
