I'm leading storm surge risk assessment projects at Binera, Inc., addressing coastal inundation hazards as it relates to climate change and sea level rise. This field is truly multidisciplinary, involving hydrodynamic and climate modeling, long-term planning for mitigation efforts, high-performance computing and statistical analysis. While the uncertainties in climate change are high, the range of possible future projections can be accounted and used to determine possible outcomes in relation to expected frequency and severity of the tropical and extratropical storms, and the extent of the associated coastal flooding. Our methodology is used in long-term planning of the protective measures against future storms and rising seas, and to implement changes in operational workflow before, during, and after significant flooding events to minimize disruptions and impacts on the operational assets.While at NOAA's National Ocean Service, I was responsible for transitioning of the numerical storm surge forecast systems into operations. Working with partners in academia, industry, Weather Service and other federal agencies, my Team implemented an ensemble-based Hurricane Surge On-Demand Forecast System (HSOFS) for the East and Gulf Coasts and the Caribbean, as well as several Extratropical Surge and Tide Operational Forecast Systems (ESTOFS) including ESTOFS-Atlantic and ESTOFS-Micronesia. The latest implementation of the Global ESTOFS will supersede all three basin-scale applications with a new global state-of-the-art system that is a major upgrade to Nation's surge forecasting capabilities. During my tenure at Stevens Institute of Technology, I was working on a storm surge coastal oceanographic modeling, with a focus on protection and adaptation of the NYC/NJ area coastline to mitigate hazards related to tropical storms and nor'easters which become more devastating with rising sea level. My computing experience includes designing and implementing full-cycle software algorithms to perform weather forensics and post-event analysis of meteorological data, as well as operational systems to deliver weather-related products. My research topics involved modeling and operational forecast of river floods, a non-linear dynamics of tsunami propagation, mesoscale oceanic variability, annual and inter-annual sea level variability in coastal and open ocean, tidal dynamics, model development for the operational ocean forecast in the NY Harbor, global ocean modeling and data assimilation as part of AER/MIT ECCO consortium, ocean acoustics tomography and more.
