I worked in the Proteomics, Metabolomics and System Nutrition group replacing a person that wason a maternity leave. My responsibilities were focused on the development of data analysis algorithms and tools, mainly in the Metabolomics platform for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR) measurements of human plasma and human urine, focusing on the preprocessing andquality control checks of the spectra.

The objective of my thesis is to develop algorithms for multivariate processing of Life Sciences samples measured with Gas Chromatography -- Ion Mobility Spectrometry instruments. The main contributions of the thesis are in the improvement of baseline estimation methods, characterization and correction of spectra misalignment and improvements on peak deconvolution methods.These methods are integrated in a toolbox for data analysis, that provides a complete workflow for the analysis of complex biological samples that ranges from the preprocessing and feature extraction to the data modelling and validation.The developed techniques have been used for discriminating olive oil samples according to the olive oil quality, useful in fraud prevention scenarios, as well as in biomarker discovery applications.

I obtained several collaboration scholarships in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications from UPC, under the supervision of Antonio Bonafonte, working on speech synthesis.I am especially proud of my contribution to the FestCat project (Speech Synthesis in Catalan) [ see http://festcat.talp.cat ]. In this project high quality Catalan voices were developed and were released under a Free Software license.Under the scholarship,- I started contributing checking the spelling of the selected prompts to be recorded.- I took part on supervising some recording sessions (although I was not the supervisor in charge)- I trained the statistical models based on the recordings using tools based on hidden Markov models and concatenation of voice segments.- I tested and packaged the voices for their distribution.Once the project and the scholarship finished, I kept maintaining as a volunteer the Catalan synthesis tools providing:- User support- Voice packaging for Linux distributions- Bug fixing- Other improvements
