I fulfil various capacities as a journalist and broadcaster in DW’s programming department, focusing largely on current affairs from Africa but also on topics pertaining to migration.I work as one of the main radio newsreaders on the "AfricaLink" program, a magazine producer for "The 77 Percent” and a video producer and presenter for the DW Global Media Forum.I also seek out live interviews, write background articles, analyses and opinion pieces. I am also in charge of editing, translating and supervising multimedia content online for various departments and have produced and contributed multiple radio packages to various DW formats including "World in Progress", "WorldLink," "Spectrum" and "Living Planet".I have worked as studio presenter in DW's "Arts and Culture", and as a moderator for the DW Global Media Forum, where I have interviewed figures like Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Turkish dissident journalist Can Dündar, Human Rights defender Sister Helen Prejean, British-Turkish author Elif Shafak, cognitive scientist Steven Pinker, Israeli-Arab vlogger Nas Daily, and computer scientist Jaron Lanier.In all my work, I seek out new ways to explore the complexities of a globalized and yet divided world.

The way we produce tell stories is constantly changing, with fresh challenges and new technological advancements making it hard to keep up the pace. "GMF talk" is a format that can best be described as "journalism about journalism" - in intimate and informal interviews, this social video format addresses trends, identifies major issues in the industry, and digs deep into analysing the motivations behind societal shifts that affect the work of media professionals.

The media's primary role is to inform the public; yet certain hot topics get overly complicated and conflated with unrelated subjects. In "GMF compact", I dissect complex issues into bite-sized portions, dispel myths, check the facts, analyze reporting and allow audiences to understand the dynamics behind the big stories of our time. Because, as the tagline of the format goes: The truth is always out there.

Recognizing the importance of innovation is an important aspect of the annual DW Global Media Forum (GMF) conference in Bonn, the largest event of its kind in Germany. At the "start-up contest" I serve as an agile organizer and liaison for media startups from around the world to pitch their formats and compete for cooperation projects with Deutsche Welle.

Diversity is not just one of the biggest buzzwords of our age but also the biggest strength any organization can pride itself in. As part of the diversity drive at Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW), I help the Diversity and International Relations department in identifying its strategy and journey towards greater inclusion and developing formats to communicate its commitment to diversity and inclusion both internally and externally.

I create content aimed at an audience of refugees and migrants, present and produce videos on migration-related issues (Fact Check series), and work as part of an international team involving Deutsche Welle, France Medias Monde (FMM) and ANSA (Italy). Our most successful video in the Fact Check series deals with migrant trying to reach Europe via the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, and has accrued over 9 million views. This project is funded by the European Union.

Working for a mainly online-publication, which ranked among the top online platforms used in South Africa at the time, I researched, wrote and edited original news content, speaking to some compelling individuals such as Bishop Desmond Tutu, South African-born chef Prue Leith, former Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, comedian and national treasure Pieter-Dirk Uys, South African artist Varenka Paschke or the first gay imam in Cape Town, Muhsin Hendricks. I was also put in charge of covering the details of the trial of former paralympian Oscar Pistorius, with several of my articles on the issue being used as reference points in other publications highlighting the case.

As I embarked on my journey as a storyteller and reporter, I took on various freelance roles as a broadcast journalist, editor, presenter and writer working for several news outlets and media organizations during this period. Focusing on current affairs, I took on various freelance assignments for publications like the Guardian and the Citizen, and got involved with several international broadcasters as well, covering a number of momentous events such as the 2012 London Olympics or the Anders Breivik trial in Norway. I also explored work as a news planner, helping broadcasting organizations to arrange their production needs around the world or assisting with establishing (and presenting) the first HD film festival, held in Edinburgh.

As various conflicts in Central Asia continued to intensify, I worked for an organization which provided governments with risk assessment profiles and other documents to carry out their work. I accepted this media analyst position to dive deeper into human rights, which has been a focus of my reporting since.

Cologne Area, Germany

Exploring the complicated and painful issue of the death penalty in the United States, I worked on a year-long documentary project which uncovered come remarkable stories. I got to speak to lawyers, activists, victims and others involved in addressing the injustices and imbalances that are built into capital punishment. My team and I went on to produce a striking product that went on to compete successfully at film festivals and was shown on various German-language networks.

Fresh out of university and with a thirst for experience I took on a position as a research analyst, dissecting data and information on various consumer markets. It was here that I learned how numbers, figures and statistics can tell their own stories, highlighting behavioural patterns which explain more about the human condition than they do about inflation or the price of milk.
