About Sergei Bulgakov

Programming is not only my specialty but also a hobby. In spare time I implement my ideas and do some research on open-source projects. For example, in the late spring of 2017, I found a "Heroes"-type old game for WindowsMobile 2003 based smartphones written on C++, and now I have been porting it to Java and Kotlin, sometimes finding unusual techniques. From the same spring of 2017, I started uploads to my GitHub: https://github.com/SerVB .Also, I have a couple of Android apps, which are now published without sources:* Game scoreboard on a phone/tablet screen "Game Results".* System GPS configuration file reader "GPS Fixer".Screenshots and downloads are here:* https://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=696651 .* https://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=716146 .Skills and abilities:Advanced: Kotlin, Java, C, Python, Android SDK; Git, GitHub, TeamCity; Windows, Unix; Docker.Basic: ASM x86, C++, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, SQL; Photoshop, MS Office.Worked with (but it was long ago): JSF, PrimeFaces, Pascal, LabView. Also, I know computers very well: I understand both the configuration of the software and the hardware; I work effectively with two monitors.Sometimes learn online at Coursera, Stepik, Hyperskill, and SoloLearn.Other interests: English and German fiction and TV-series (it's really fun to understand jokes in a non-native language); podcasts; ecology and biology.

Listed skills include Kotlin, Java, C++, Python, and 34 others.

Software Developer

Current

Munich, Bavaria, Germany

The company allows internal rotation and relocation:"Wormhole" SWE intern. The project was to develop from scratch a way to embed any Windows apps into Java Swing apps. The resulting library allowing easy-to-use and seamless embedding and doing all the inter-process communication under the hood automatically was later used in the company product "Rider"."Hyperskill" Kotlin Teaching Track Lead. I made decisions which lessons and projects should be written, reviewed new Kotlin and Android lessons and projects, addressed learners' feedback, did tests and bug reports myself. Attached link description contains info on my non-manager tasks."Projector" SWE. As a single developer, and almost from scratch, created a server-side library and a browser client to stream and control Java Swing apps remotely (the use is JetBrains Remote Development). The server side was required to run even without any windowing system (headlessly), so besides investigating and recreating the rendering pipeline and user actions, I implemented window manager-like features. I communicated with other teams, and e.g. added Projector support to other products like JetBrains Space. During hackathons, I leveraged my designed platform-independent core and lightweightness of the client side, and created native mobile and game-engine-based Projector-compatible clients to prove that Projector is made as a universal remote access solution. I became the Technical Lead of the project and mentored 5 interns. The peak user count of Projector is estimated as tens of thousands."Toolbox App" SWE. I did Windows, Linux, and macOS-integration-related tasks, but my main activity was owning the Toolbox Feed subsystem – a protocol of the app to get new tools and versions. For scalability and reliability, it was carefully designed as a set of static files behind CDN – the user count was about 2M.Other SWE full-time and 20% activities: e.g. "Space" Desktop App, "internal learning", "internal development".

Jul 2018 - Present

Assistant Programmer

Moscow, Russia

2018-2021: "Kotlin" Elective Offline Course Assistant. I helped to hold lectures and reviewed students' solutions. I discussed course materials with the professor, prepared and reviewed tasks/homeworks, organized invited talks, consulted students, and held seminars and master classes.2018-2019: using Python, I developed website parsers. My parsers gathered data from open public pages into json and csv files, which were later used by the University researchers. The details are under NDA, but I can mention that the solution included support for paginated pages (hundreds of pages with thousands of entries per parsed site in total) and careful management of cookies.2018-2019: Coursera Online Course Assistant, the "Basics of programming in Python" ("Основы программирования на Python") online course. My responsibilities were: answers to learners' questions, help with tasks solving (search for mistakes or giving hints), course materials editing. During my assistance, the course rating increased from 4.5 to 4.7 (out of 5). I answered to about 3K questions. I also did QA of Coursera itself and copied some of my major email reports to a public tracker (github.com/SerVB/coursera-issues).Spring 2019: "Moscow Coding School" included Java 8 online course tasks development (Gradle, Maven; Lambdas; Streams) and answers to learners' questions.2021-2022: during the Corona lockdown, I remotely suggested and mentored more than 10 student courseworks.

2018 - 2022 ~4 yrs

Software Developer

Science And Technology Center "Skorz"

Moscow, Russian Federation

I did my first commercial software development internships during my school: the company was making a minimalistic Linux-based OS for learning and teaching, and particilarly needed apps. I was given tasks and hints like technoligies, and I was able to learn and solve on my own.In the first internship, I created the "Generator" and the "Reader" apps for the product's Help Pages (like the ones in old Windows called by F1; or something like mkdocs/readthedocs if we remember nowadays alternatives):* The Generator: a pure Java 6 program builds a static index and help pages using content files of the chosen directory.* The Reader: a frontend is implemented using HTML, CSS and JS. The frontend also uses the files generated on the previous step: the index file to show contents on the left side of the page, and the actual selected content on the right side of the page.In the second internship, I created minimalistic audio and video players – I used Java 6 and open audio/video libraries: Swing for UI, JacoPlayer for audio play, Jvlc for video play.In the third internship, I created an SQL-like database query result viewer (in other words, a server table generator to display tables on a client-side browser) – the stack was Java EE, Java SE 8, JSF, PrimeFaces, JDBC. The SQL dialect and engine were in-house, that's why I don't mention some well-known databases.

2015 - 2017 ~2 yrs

Janitor

Mosvodostok

Moscow, Russian Federation

My middle school proposed a janitor work for summer holidays, and because I love helping the environment, it have become my first job. My tasks were cleaning the areas around city lakes – according to the company motto "clean lakes = clean city". I was a part of a group, so we had to divide lakes and areas together and rotate. Surprisingly, every new day after our work it wasn't clean anymore, especially after weekends, so our regular work there was indeed required. This is not professional experience but at some extent it can prove that I'm quite hard-working.
