About Seth Campbell
I am an Associate Professor in the School of Earth & Climate Sciences and Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine and also the Director of Research for the rapidly growing Juneau Icefield Research Program (http://juneauicefield.org/). I am passionate about developing opportunities for students, educators, and communities which concurrently help to solve real life environmental problems. I have broad scientific interests in improving our understanding of Earth systems and cryosphere change and my specific expertise in applying ground-penetrating radar to near surface cryosphere (e.g., glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost) and environmental studies. Over the past two decades I've conducted glaciology, applied geology, near-surface geophysics, water, and natural resources research using a range of field and numerical modeling methods. My primary study locations have been in New England, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Antarctica, Greenland, and Canada. I also have over two decades of remote travel experience, previously worked as an advanced emergency medical technician, wilderness medicine instructor, and climbing guide. My driving goal is to help individuals and communities build skills, resources, and collaborations to tackle the range of local to global environmental challenges that society faces.

Director Of Academics And Research
The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) is a field based training program that 30-35 undergraduate (and some graduate) students participate in, each year. Students traverse 110 km across the Juneau Icefield from Juneau to Atlin, BC learning about field glaciology, geophysics, glacial geology, climatology/meteorology and a number of other cryosphere-related topics from 50+ faculty and staff over 2 months. Students also gain glacier mountaineering, wilderness first aid, and other expeditionary training during this experience. We typically have 6 to 8 focused research projects of scientific interest led by faculty, that students participate in. Recent projects have focused on radio-glaciology and other geophysical studies, isotope geochemistry, glacier mass balance, biogeochemistry, glacial geology, ecology, geomorphology, snow hydrology, glacier hydrology, and Polar ecology. Research Geophysicist
I work as a Research Geophysicist for the Engineering Resources Branch at CRREL. My expertise is in Cryosphere geophysics and as part of this position I have conducted research on snow, firn, ice, permafrost, and near surface geology. My study sites are primarily in New England, Alaska and Antarctica. Recent projects include assessing the stability and structure of the McMurdo Ice Shelf in support of the US Antarctic Program (USAP) and mapping the near surface geology and structure of McMurdo in support of the long term USAP master plan to update and redesign McMurdo Station. Other projects I have assisted with or conducted include the testing of oil spill response equipment in Arctic conditions, radio wave propagation/attenuation research, and surficial/bedrock geology geophysical research.

I worked as a Research Physical Scientist for a branch of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (CRREL), conducting geophysical (GPR, resistivity, magnetic) site surveys for permafrost research, near-surface geology studies related to hydro-geological research, contaminated site assessments, and unexploded ordinance detection. I also conducted glaciological research, radio wave propagation field studies, and basic research on GPR propagation in various geological mediums (tills, bedrock, sand, gravel,etc).

I am co-funded by the University of Washington "Future of Ice" Initiative and also at the University of Maine through the National Science Foundation to complete glaciological research in Alaska, Canada, and Antarctica. My primary UWashington/UMaine project in the Pacific Northwest is focused on reconstructing the ice flow dynamics at several ice core sites to estimate and compare Holocene precipitation patterns regionally. My primary UWashington/UMaine project in Antarctica is to map englacial structure of the Allan Hills to determine new potential ice core sites for studying long term climate. This region shows promise of having ice that is over one million years old. At each study location I am using a combination of field geophysical methods and numerical modeling.

I am partially funded by the National Science Foundation working with a team from UC Davis and Harvard on a three year project (2015-2017) to reconstruct the glacial history surrounding the Ohio Range, a remote mountain site within the Trans-Antarctic Mountains.
