I was a Data Scientist at UnitedHealth Group's OptumLabs, formerly known as UHG Research & Development, and before that as Savvysherpa, Inc. My jobs had two parts: to answer healthcare research questions by using UHG's vast datasets, and to build tools to help Data Scientists and others in the organization automate and streamline their workflows. Specifics include:- Using SQL, R and Python to query, clean, shape, model, and visualize terabytes of health insurance claims data, giving detailed answers to research questions- Being a top contributor to our internal data science packages in Python and R in an agile team of12 developers, including writing features, unit tests, peer code reviews, and documentation- Engineering a tool to track use of our internal packages using GitHub API and Python- Building R Shiny dashboards to visualize pharmacy claims trends during COVID-19- Using unsupervised clustering to tell data stories comparing nasopharyngeal and buccal swabs for COVID-19 testing- Constructing an Airflow ETL pipeline to compute individual blood glucose metrics from over 2 million continuous glucose monitor events per day- Programming a data validation application in Java using OWL API to replace an hours-long manual process, decreasing required compute time by 83% and employee time by 99.7% while on internal exchange with Solutions Architecture team- Solving a data blindness issue in which certain health conditions were 90% underreported in claims data by creating and validating new data definitions, and then presenting these findings to stakeholders at Centers for Disease Control and disease testing companies.Technologies I use regularly include BigQuery SQL, R (dplyr/dbplyr, ggplot2, Rmarkdown, devtools), Python (pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, networkx), and git/GitHub.

After completing Kenyon's "AI for the Humanities" course, I was selected to participate in a multidisciplinary workshop in natural language processing. I was paired with faculty in the Spanish department. I scraped and cleaned Spanish and English language datasets in Python using Beautiful Soup, and then performed sentiment analysis and topic modelling, sharing and interpreting results with Spanish professors.

I met three times a week with students of Kenyon's yearlong Intensive Introduction to German course; students are required to attend in addition to their four weekly lessons with their German professor. I drilled grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation in five to six exercises per class session.

At the Kenyon Math and Science skills center, I tutored students in calculus and foundations of mathematics courses, offering homework help and practice with new math concepts.

While studying abroad in Berlin, Germany, I interned at zbMATH, an indexing and reviewing service for mathematical books and articles. Among my duties were proofreading English-language reviews and documents, updating internal forms from Tex to LaTeX, and enhancing and crosslinking bibliographic data of authors. Throughout, I spoke German as a second language with my coworkers.

As an student researcher at the 2017 CSU Channel Islands Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), I worked closely with three other undergraduates and a faculty mentor for a summer. We did original research in operator theory defined on infinite graphs. Our results were later published in the journal Operators and Matrices.
