I taught university courses for 13 years while pursuing the working-class, instructor-to-professor career route (spoiler: Ph.D. and publications earned, but did not end up a unicorn). Layoffs at Oregon State University in 2016 coincided with the take-off of Oregon CBD, a cannabis seed business I co-founded with my brother (Eric) the year before. While we always had other professional interests, cannabis breeding has been one of our main shared passions since we left the nest--the science, history, and potential has kept us working with this particular plant with rabid curiosity for 25 years.The rise of the hemp industry--a socially constructed conceptualization of cannabis--in the United States allowed us to transform our science-informed backyard breeding into one of the leading cannabis seed production companies in the world. Our goal is to empower farmers with the best possible chances for success, while pushing forward the boundaries of cannabis science in the most public ways possible--and working with other like-minded people and organizations to do so.
