About Seth Sutton

I am a current Phd student in geological sciences working on the application of planktonic and benthic foraminifera. My research has allowed me to develop skills in stratigraphy (lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and sequence stratigraphy) paleoecology, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and statistics. My field work experience has allowed me to apply and analyze geophysical data from GPR and CHIRP using sonar whiz.

    • Interdisciplinary science focused on combining ecology, chemistry and geology to better understand the impact of sea level, carbon burial, and anoxia on coastal ecosystems from past hyperthermals to project anthropogenic climate change impacts on modern communities.• Micropaleontology, plus biostatics and stable isotope geochemistry to reconstruct benthic communities across periods of high organic carbon burial and differentiate significant changes in biota.• Expertise in carbon and oxygen isotope analysis, sequence stratigraphy, coastal processes , cluster analysis, ordination analysis, sampling schemes and analysis of variance.• Logged sediment cores and four outcrops on three field excursions.• Planned 3 field work excursions, including transportation, sampling schemes, objectives, and safety protocols.• Developed effective and easy to flow R scripts for in house data analysis.• Mentored 3 undergraduate students on proper statistical analysis and experimental design.• Collaborated with the United States Geological Survey on the Geological Investigation of the Neogene Project and Atlantic Subsurface Stratigraphic Initiative to understand and document past climate events in the Chesapeake bay area.• Wrote two successful grants totaling ~$4000 to find my research. • Currently have 2 first author papers in preparation.
  • Akima - Us Geological Survey
    Science Technician 3
Akima - Us Geological Survey Aug 2023 - Oct 2023
    Madison, Wisconsin, United States
•Contracted to the US Geological Survey to find, preserve and update micropaleontology data of five sediment cores along the Atlantic Coastal Plain. • Developed project plans to recover and piece together unfamiliar and sometimes incomplete data sets so they would have scientific significance.•Developed new R scripts that can be used by scientist unfamiliar with R to statistically differentiate biological communities to conduct paleoenvironmental interpretations. • Performed detrended correspondence analysis, Non-metric dimensional scaling, cluster analysis, and analysis of variance to identify changes is species and species diversity. •The data was published for public record and is currently being written up for three scientific publications.
  • East Carolina University
    Micropaleontology Lab Manager
East Carolina University Aug 2018 - Jul 2020
    • Maintained micropaleontology lab to OSHA standards.• Mentored four undergraduates and four graduate students in laboratory techniques such as floating, pipetting, and grain-size analysis.• Maintained inventory and tracked lab expenses.• Organized and updated lab safety documents.
  • East Carolina University
    Graduate Research Assistant
East Carolina University Aug 2018 - Jul 2020
    Greenville, North Carolina, United States
    • Graduate research assistant using benthic foraminifera, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and statistics to understand the impact of sea level fluctuations, and climate on coastal biota and ecosystems.• Planned two field excursions to collect 63 samples for scientific study from the Calvert Cliffs.• Used a combination of grain-size anlysis, and foraminiferal assemblages to reconstruct climate and sea level in the Chesapeake Bay.• Created a new bathymetry across the Miocene sediments based on foraminiferal assemblages and differentiated sequence stratigraphic tracts in the study area.• Collaborated with the federal government (United States Geological Survey) on the Geological Investigations of the Neogene Project.• Presented one poster and one talk at the Geological Society of America.• Published two scientific papers (one first author and one second author) with another in preparation.• Published one paper in the Ecophoria for the general public to understand the significance of the scientific study on climate in their area.•Wrote two successful grants with a total of $2200 in scientific grant money for this project.
  • East Carolina University
Research Assistant: Subdividing Coastal Environments Based On Foraminifera And Lithology
East Carolina University Aug 2017 - May 2018
    Greenville, North Carolina, United States
•Undergraduate research assistant working on subdividing coastal environments using Holocene foraminiferal assemblages and lithostratigraphy off the coast of Bogue Banks, NC, under the supervision of Dr. Stephen J. Culver.• Coordinated with the North Carolina Geological Survey for field work and sampling.• Logged two cores, representing an inlet and shoreface environment, making notes of changes in lithology, grain size, and biota.• Sampled cores for benthic foraminiferal processing and identification.• Completed basic statistics on the foraminiferal samples and compared the results to previous studies. •Deliverables included a poster at the southeastern Geological Society of America conference, a senior honors thesis, and authorship on a scientific paper.
