The university of Science and Technology China sponsored my trip to their campus to consult and strengthen seven student team projects and align them with the design thinking process. All seven unique projects were designed by talented engineering students, but all were lacking various design thinking components. Of the forty-three students I consulted, only twelve had met me prior to visiting their campus. Giving advice was something I had to earn from these smart and proud students. Through demonstrating prototype testing with target users I showcased the importance of gathering insights to implement needed changes and improvements. As each team experienced increased interest and engagement from their target demographic, our relationships grew stronger and more cohesive. Teams presented projects daily for critiques from both professors and myself, frequently leading to large changes. All Final projects were presented to professors, affiliates, government representatives and students. My contributions to one team resulted in them asking me to present here in San Francisco. Together we designed a spherical robot. Bibo is a clear sphere containing a motorized 3D printed body, and a half sphere as a head that houses two LED screens for eyes. Motion is a result of voice commands powered by raspberry pie, and mobilized by multiple gyroscopes. Bibo learns the voice signatures of its owner and tailors responses based on tone of voice. To aid in behavioral learning Bibo will put itself in time-out when treated poorly, and spin around with excitement when teated well. Arithmetic and language programs can also be uploaded for use as a learning aid, quizzing and assisting the owner in learning subject matter. Our research also led to insights for possible applications for persons with autism. This experience showcased my ability to work well in teams and as a project manager. It also demonstrated my ability to apply the design thinking process to any product type.

This design thinking program is modeled on Stanford's ME310 program, with the additional element of collaboration between university teams from foreign countries. I was chosen as one of four San Francisco State University students to participate in the year long collaboration effort partnered with the University of Science and Technology China (USTC). All participants met first in Santa Clara, CA for the spring kickoff event. Our challenge was given by our corporate sponsor, SAP China. We were to ideate and present an artifact that connects humans digitally, making them aware of personal behaviors. Liaisons from: BASF, Merck, BMW, Generali, Roche, Ikea, Mercedes, Daimler, Stanford University, and other local tech and data companies assisted us as we worked through the ideation and design thinking processes. Our team presented multiple options including: A house water monitoring system, Portable drinking container with contaminate testing and digital read out, App that calculates personal environmental pollution contributions, calculated by daily activity inputsMy contributions in this program ultimately led to a USTC sponsored trip as a consultant to their campus in Hefei China. Prior to starting the program, all teams were to design a "paper bike" to compete on an obstacle course. The requirements for the bike were as follows: Must be made entirely of paper consisting of no more than 500g of non paper material Must hold a passenger no less than 15cm above the ground. Must collapse down to fit in a large checked airline size bag (W+L+H = < = 60 inches) (All universities needed to travel internationally with their "bike")The reason for this exercise; to teach us not to fall in love with prototypes. Before learning the design thinking process our prototypes were personal. By destroying our paper bikes in this competition we gained valuable knowledge; build rapid, low cost prototypes, and test early before investing substantially.
