Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic

For several years I coordinated and taught in the Business School at the graduate (MBA) and undergraduate levels. I introduced teaching with using the case study method and wrote the University's first teaching case study about a local, woman-owned, startup in the fashion industry. Courses I taught include Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR/ESG), Marketing Management, Business Leadership, Business Communications, and Entrepreneurship in the MBA program; and Career Planning and Urban Development for undergraduates. For all courses, I developed my own curriculum. Coached and supervised MBA students on their senior theses. Moved to the Anthropology program to develop a new concentration in Urban Planning and Design. Co-taught two introductory courses: Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning and Redesigning the Commons, a practicum on working with neighborhoods in the City of Bishkek to improve public spaces. After several years, the program was officially approved by the administration and took in its first majors in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

At the Tian Shan Policy Center I researched and developed a set of community indicators for the Kyrgyz Republic based on work I did with community indicators for Silicon Valley. The report included measures for the state of the economy, healthcare, education, and women's rights in comparison with competitive nations. Created an advisory board consisting of local academics, NGOs, and economic development professionals.

Kyrgyzstan

Arrived in 2009 as Director of Operations for the post. Promoted to County Director in 2010. As Country Director, responsible for the safety and performance of 80+ Peace Corps Volunteers. Managed programming, training, medical staff, operations, finances, safety and security. Programs included Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Health Education, and Sustainable Organizations and Community Development. Partnered with the Kyrgyz Republic Government and local NGOs. In June 2010, as Acting Country Director, led the team through the rescue of 16 Volunteers from major civil unrest in Osh.As Director of Operations I was responsible for financial and human resources, facilities and contractual relations. Managed accounting department, guards, drivers, and information systems. Supported Volunteers and staff through violent revolution in April 2010. Implemented numerous changes that improved Volunteer support and operational efficiency.

Silicon Valley

Led the Climate Prosperity Initiative, Climate Change Task Force, Wireless Silicon Valley, and Cell Phone Coverage projects. Conceived and launched development of large scale public procurement of solar panels by local governments. Negotiated agreement with ICLEI to do carbon footprint calculations for cities and counties in Bay Area at a discount. Began formation of new industry cluster developing renewable energy, battery, electric vehicle, energy management technologies, and more to reduce CO2 emissions. San Francisco Bay Area

I founded Connected Communities to help cities and counties assess their ability to use the Internet for economic development, competitiveness, and quality of life. Clients have included neighborhoods in Chicago, nine counties in California's San Joaquin Valley, and small towns like Ashland, Oregon. A key contribution was the development of a roadmap to help communities create their development strategies. The roadmap was created in partnership with the Computer Systems Policy Project, a computer industry public policy association.

San Francisco Bay Area

Developed an economic development growth strategy for a major real estate developer that was based on industry cluster analysis. Prepared a vision and economic strategy for development of a large, new community in Indonesia. Led workshops on Civic Entrepreneurship.

Silicon Valley

I held management positions in finance, product marketing, advertising, public policy, philanthropy, information systems, and strategic planning with several product lines, including instrument and semiconductor manufacturing, applications software for manufacturers, and UNIX servers. I also spent 10 years in market development at HP Laboratories working with technologies such as artificial intelligence, micromachining, the Internet, and flat panel displays. My last assignment was bringing HP's first internet servers to market. That product line generated over $100 million in revenues in its first year.

Palo Alto, California

Researched opportunities for manufactured housing in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Brazil.

Pokhara And Kathmandu

Designed and built drinking water systems for rural villages in Nepal. Partners included UNICEF, WHO, and His Majesty's Government. In my second year I worked as Project Coordinator in the Economic Development Department of His Majesty's Government in Kathmandu. Clean water dramatically reduced infant mortality due to dysenteries in the villages. The program proved so successful that by the end of the decade the Peace Corps had phased out of the program, turning it over to the Government.
