  • Ashgate Publishing Ltd
    Senior Editor
Ashgate Publishing Ltd Jan 2013 - Nov 2015
    Burlington, Vermont Area
I was responsible for the project management of at least 36 scholarly books annually as well as the supervision of two members of our editorial staff. The project management part of my job required that, on any given day, I juggle between 12 and 18 books, all at various stages of the publication process. This work involved applying edits to original manuscripts and typeset proofs; reviewing content of cover proofs; processing and revising artwork; checking and accepting or rejecting the edits of freelance proofreaders and copy editors; typesetting all content for a book using various templates and style manuals; creating an ebook; walking the author through each stage of the process with constant and clear communication; and regularly liaising with the commissioning, marketing, production, finance, and IT teams. I operated with consideration of conservative budgets and tight deadlines. As a senior editor, I trained editorial team members at the outset of their employment and provided guidance so that they were ultimately able to maintain a similar workload of 36 books per year. I assessed and allocated books to my team, taking into consideration each team member’s strengths and workload. I planned and prioritized my schedule as well as the schedules of my team, and I offered up solutions for potential production delays. I monitored the work of my team and provided yearly appraisals based on individual goals. In addition, I created and maintained a proofreading test for prospective freelance editors. I regularly negotiated rates, hired, and monitored the work of freelancers, answering queries and giving feedback if necessary.
  • Ashgate Publishing Ltd
    Desk Editor
Ashgate Publishing Ltd Sep 2007 - Dec 2012
    Burlington, Vermont Area
I was responsible for the project management of between 36 and 40 social science and humanities books annually. Following tight production deadlines and within conservative budgets, I contracted freelance proofreaders and copy editors; reviewed their revisions, accepting or deleting them using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes; processed and revised all artwork using Photoshop and Illustrator; typeset all content in InDesign; applied author revisions to proofs; collaborated with commissioning editor, author, production, and freelance designer to create cover dust jackets; reviewed the work of freelance indexers and edited indexes created by authors; created and finalized ebooks; and performed a final check of all content prior to sending each book to print.Operating in our Burlington, VT satellite office (the main office was in Farnham, UK), my responsibilities were sometimes unique from the rest of the editorial team. I often took initiative when the guidance of my UK colleagues was unavailable, and in doing so I helped to shape the workflow of the US editorial team in a way that made sense both logistically and for the team. For instance, since our office did not house a production department, I was instrumental in establishing a new workflow for editors to process artwork in-house rather than sending it to the production department in the UK office.
  • Dartmouth Journal Services
    Production Editor
Dartmouth Journal Services Apr 2006 - Aug 2007
    Waterbury, Vermont
When Capital City Press closed, I was transferred to its sister company within The Sheridan Group where I initially maintained a similar workload to my production editor role at CCP. Ultimately, though, I was reassigned to a higher-profile account, the journal of Genetics (published monthly by the Genetics Society of America). In this position, I helped oversee the production and compilation of the journal; served as a contact for the managing editor, authors, copy editors, and composition department; reviewed copyediting and provided feedback to the copy editor coordinator; assembled all issue components for typesetting; and performed a review of all articles and standing matter to ensure accuracy of information and typesetting. This role required that I work in collaboration with another production editor.
  • Capital City Press

After excelling in my assistant position, I was promoted to a production editor. In this role, while operating with strict deadlines, I oversaw the production and compilation of ~15 Elsevier, Inc. journal titles, which were published on a monthly or quarterly basis. I served as the primary contact for guest editors, consulting editors, acquisition editors, authors, copy editors, and indexers; liaised between overseas compositors and in-house production; distributed feedback to freelance copy editors and indexers; prepared art for proper layout according to specifications and assembled all issue components for typesetting; and tracked all records using FileMaker Pro in-house as well as our customer's database. In addition, I assisted in training new editorial staff and updating workflow checklists; copyedited the majority of articles for the Elsevier, Inc. journal The Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment; and managed the author-proofing stage of the Cell Press journal Developmental Cell.
  • Capital City Press
    Assistant Production Editor

After cutting my teeth as a typesetter, I accepted this assistant position in the Redactory Department. My responsibilities included preparing artwork for the Scanning Department by sizing images according to title specifications; contacting authors to enquire about outstanding proofs; transferring author corrections to master proofs while verifying correctness of grammar and style; and reviewing revised proofs to ensure accuracy of typesetter's corrections.
  • Capital City Press
    Typesetter
Capital City Press Oct 1999 - Jun 2000
    Barre, Vermont
My first job out of college was for the now defunct Capital City Press, which printed mostly Science, Technology, Engineering and Math journals. I imported electronic manuscript text and art files into an Adobe Pagemaker typesetting template; set and adjusted text, tables, and art according to title specifications; and incorporated proofreader corrections as necessary. Within the first few weeks of this job, I was one of the most productive typesetters in the company.
