While finishing the last two semesters of my Master's Degree in Communications I assisted the College of Community and Public Service (CCPS), the 2nd largest college at GVSU, with general communications. In this position, I was a key part of the creation and management of all CCPS social media, websites, and communications. In addition to these tasks, I was asked to produce several short films, each highlighting a different aspect of this diverse community of scholars, professionals, and students.

After serving as the Communications Coordinator at Local First for nearly two years, I was hired to do a special project. Local First needed a large-scale marketing campaign to reach new audiences with new advertising mediums. I was hired to design the campaign, create an infrastructure, establish all the relationships needed to make the campaign a success, launch the campaign, and create tools and trainings so that the Local First staff could take over once everything was up and running. This was an extremely fulfilling project and it turned out to be a huge success. So far the Discover Your Local Treasure campaign has generated over 200 million impressions and is still going. At Local First I manage all media, marketing, and communications. In my roll as public relations manager I draft press releases; schedule print, radio, and television interviews; and cultivate relationships with key people at all relevant publications in the Greater Grand Rapids area. In my roll as marketing specialist, I develop marketing campaigns for each Local First event and consult on the development of the general Local First campaign. This requires a high level of interaction with all members of the creative and production process including advertisers. As manger of communications, I oversee the Local First website and all social media outlets, monitor analytics, compose newsletters and produce a wide variety of media including video, audio, and graphics.

While pursuing my graduate degree in Communications at Grand Valley State University, I was employed as a graduate assistant for the Research Protections Program. This department oversees all research and institutional, state, and federal research oversight at GVSU. With a heavy emphasis on customer service, I interacted with faculty, staff, and students as I managed all research project submissions, the department website, and communications. I also led trainings and gave lectures outlining the research approval process.

While living in Ann Arbor and attending the University of Michigan, I was contracted several times by The Neutral Zone, a non-profit focused on providing a healthy social space for teens, to create informational and promotional videos. These videos depicted the activities of various Neutral Zone programs. Each program aimed to provide specialized social support for teens. As videographer, I supervised each production from start to finish, playing almost every roll of the film crew.

I was a recipient of a Telluride Scholarship at the University of Michigan. This is a full room and board scholarship provided by the Telluride Association, an endowment-based organization whose mission it is to support students who are dedicated to the principles endorsed by the Telluride Association: democracy, service, and intellectual inquiry. As a recipient of the Telluride Scholarship, I served as an application reader and endowment custodian. My duties as an application reader were to assist in the selection of candidates for various Telluride programs. While an endowment custodian, I assisted in the management of the over $50 million dollar Telluride endowment.

In 2012, I received grant funding to join the creative team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and aid in the creation of an online social media based support network for teen cancer survivors. I oversaw sound production, video editing, and consulted on the construction of the social network platform.

Bangalore, India

I returned to the Children’s Project in 2010 after receiving a $5,000 grant for the creation of a media production program at the school. I spent six weeks installing equipment, training staff, creating a curriculum, and leading classes.

Detroit, Michigan

I led a group of University of Michigan students on a weekly visit to a Detroit public high school. Our group used the video and film production process as a context for the introduction of academic and real world skills. I also led a discussion section comprised of the student volunteers once a week in Ann Arbor.

I spent the summer of 2009 working at the West Michigan Film Office. I helped bring film projects to Michigan and facilitated the needs of the production companies already working in West Michigan.

Lusaka, Zambia

In 2006 I join a film crew in Lusaka, Zambia as assistant director on a short film entitled Lusaka Sunrise. This film tells the story of Grassroots Soccer, an organization which does innovative work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Since soccer plays such a central roll in Zambian culture, soccer coaches hold a high place in society. To inspiringly effective ends, Grassroots Soccer trains coaches to disseminate HIV/AIDS education. As assistant director, I managed the logistics of crew, subjects, locations, equipment, and government permits.
