The Graham School extends the University of Chicago's distinctive educational approach to lifelong learners globally. As dean, I have had the honor of partnering with world-class faculty, instructors, staff, students, and advisors to strengthen the school's eminence in liberal arts education and to seed the school's leadership in mid-life transition programs. I have been energized to see our school more than double in size (as measured by revenues) over the last two years thanks to the dedicated work of our extraordinary team.

The Baumhart Center prepares leaders with the values, knowledge, and networks to build a better world. As Founding Director, I collaborated with faculty, students, corporate executives, and social entrepreneurs to develop educational programs, research partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives that address society’s most pressing challenges. Alongside leading the Center, I was an Executive Lecturer of Management at Loyola’s Quinlan School of Business, teaching courses on nonprofit leadership, social entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility. My most rewarding experiences at Loyola included:- Building a world-class team of adjunct faculty, staff, and advisors to achieve our ambitious mission. - Launching and growing Baumhart Scholars, a first-of-its-kind MBA that prepares leaders from the private, government, and social sectors to thrive at the intersection of profit and purpose. - Establishing the Innovator in Social Business Awards, a nationally significant award series that recognizes companies at the forefront of social innovation in business. - Collaboratively developing a new undergraduate minor and new graduate and executive education courses on social impact. - Developing an array of education initiatives that engaged more than 14,000 professionals and students from across the U.S. in learning how to integrate business strategy and social purpose.

Y.O.U. closes the opportunity gap by preparing youth for post-secondary and life success. I joined Y.O.U. as the organization’s second executive director, succeeding a founding director who led the institution for over 40 years. I began my tenure by facilitating a strategic planning process with our board, staff, partners, and families, which resulted in an ambitious vision for scaling our program impact, improving our finances, and enhancing our institutional architecture. I then spearheaded this vision’s execution over the next six years, leading a talented and dedicated team as we dramatically expanded our programs, launched a multi-million dollar endowment, and constructed a state-of-the-art new headquarters.My most rewarding experiences at Y.O.U. included:- Leading a team of 76 devoted staff and supporting a caring and generous 25-member board of directors.- Completing a $16.4 million private fundraising campaign and opening a new, state-of-the-art headquarters.- Spearheading a programmatic expansion from 450 youth served in 2010 to 1,600 in 2017.- Expanding the annual budget from $1.4 million to $4.7 million while diversifying our revenue streams.- Facilitating two strategic planning processes that resulted in enhanced program structure and deepened impact.

While leading Y.O.U., I served as an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern, teaching a course entitled “Lessons in Non-Profit Management.” My class introduced students to the business of social change, immersing them in topics ranging from fundraising and financial management to program strategy and performance assessment. My students then applied this knowledge by serving on consulting teams that helped local non-profits solve real-world management and strategy challenges.My most rewarding experiences as a faculty member at Northwestern included:- Developing a highly interactive class experience that enabled students to have tangible impact.- Advising a student club that connects student leaders with social impact opportunities.- Hosting guest speakers, including CEOs of some of our country’s largest non-profits and foundations.

JOIN is a public-private venture fund that invests in, evaluates, and advocates for pathways out of poverty for vulnerable adults. When JOIN’s executive committee hired me in 2009 as its founding director, the group had a powerful mission statement and tasked me with developing a clear strategy and work plan. I began my work by meeting with key stakeholders, listening to their ideas, sharing my ideas, and ultimately developing a common strategy. The centerpiece of our resulting approach involved supporting job training partnerships between businesses, City agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations. We then invested in six such partnerships that empowered over 700 adults to advance in their careers in the first year. Leading JOIN allowed me to play a key role in advancing next-generation policies for moving people out of poverty and into positive pathways. My most rewarding experiences at JOIN included:- Developing JOIN’s investment criteria with public, philanthropic, and business leaders.- Raising and aligning more than $5 million in funding to support JOIN partnerships.- Developing the measurement systems for our impact, in partnership with our third-party evaluator.

McKinsey & Company is a global management consulting firm that serves leading businesses, governments, non governmental organizations, and not-for-profits. I supported senior executives at Fortune 500 companies on talent management, organizational development, shareholder value creation, and global business strategy. I also received McKinsey’s “Community Fellowship,” which allowed me to spend a year supporting non-profit clients. My most rewarding experiences as a McKinsey consultant included:- Developing a plan to promote long-term social and economic recovery in Detroit.- Envisioning a public-private venture fund to spur economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. - Supporting a media conglomerate in an initiative to mobilize the public behind ending poverty.

AID is a network for young Americans who seek to address today's most pressing global issues. I founded AID with a team of peers to empower young Americans to support action on issues ranging from global poverty to climate change. Thanks to a fresh and scalable model, our organization quickly mushroomed from a shoestring effort based out of an Oxford University dorm room to a thriving non-profit with over 20,000 members and foundation support from the Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Open Society Institute, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. My five years leading AID were exhilarating and fast-paced, as we built a non-profit from the ground up and then streamlined and branded that organization in an ever-changing student environment.My most rewarding experiences at AID included:- Managing a passionate team of program staff, regional field directors, and university interns.- Forging partnerships with the Brookings Institution, NRDC, CARE, and the ONE Campaign.- Participating in the White House Summit on Malaria and in the Clinton Global Initiative.- Chairing Hope not Hate, an initiative that engaged tens of thousands in cross-cultural dialogue.
