Worked with great teams that spanned the Traveler customer journey, client APIs, core domains, and overall Vrbo lodging ecosystem.We shipped more new features and capabilities than I can list. We innovated on better ways to work across product mgmt, design, engineering and data functions to ideate, design, build, and evolve based upon:* Customer journey mapping, and a focus on web and native app alignment* Instrumented customer activities and product flows with self-serve team ownership & analysis of behavioral and underlying system data* Art & Science to guide us: user research, Google Design Sprints, and similar - paired with online controlled experimentationThe result of our collective efforts was Vrbo taking a leadership position within the Expedia family of brands, and playing a key growth role through the challenges of COVID and beyond.

Experimentation Platform - led the dedicated Vrbo platform efforts into applied science, testing, and learning to accelerate and optimize our customer experience and business.We worked closely with sibling brands (Hotels.com, Expedia, and more) to shape and implement a path toward a unified cross-brand Experimentation Platform. We defined and instituted processes and workflows to foster and grow a culture of democratized experimentation. Most crucially, we were ice-breakers on the path toward a unified set of core platform capabilities Expedia-wide to maximize the leverage of investments and innovations that continues to this day.

After quite a few years spent at medium to large scale companies, my time at CreativeLive was an incredible reminder of how it does not take an army to make a significant impact. New technology incubation and design/build/support of core Skype services in Node.js and C# on Azure. Highlights were collaborating with teams in Microsoft Research and the Bing groups (amazing folks!) on both special projects and production services, and jumping into the deep end with cloud technologies and devops on Azure at global scale.A few notable and fascinating projects:* Trouter: A control plane and signaling layer for web & native Skype client interop, implemented in Nodejs and hosted on Azure. At the time, likely the largest Socket.io deployment on the planet* Porting Trouter to Midori and M#, a Microsoft Research effort to build a type-safe OS, where M# was effectively C# for systems programming and the birthplace of async/await :)* Incubation & experiments related to native app unbundling, short-form asynchronous communication and sharing, and phone number based account provisioning: SkypeQik * Rehoming Skype contact search out of Skype's original PostgreSQL infrastructure and into the Bing stack (ObjectStore, and more); interactive search over 9+ billion structured entries is a novel problem

Reflecting on these years, I'm mindblown by the number of meaningful product and platform innovations I had to privilege to contribute to. These became the foundational primitives and raised the bar for what we create and how we express ourselves and interact with each other on the internet.Project Primetime and Flash Media Server radness - unlocking video and media/data interactions across the internet. Many innovations in OTT media streaming, including in the areas of program stream stitching and insertion/splicing, captioning, and more. Several patents awarded to our team. Also, peer-to-peer media and data exchange and the RTMFP protocol, which were hands-down right at the top of the most fascinating work of my career.Prior to Flash Media Server & Flash Player, several years of work devoted to deep innovations in the area of Rich Internet Applications, built with the Flex client SDK and Java-based server frameworks. The specific products I helped design and build included LiveCycle Data Services (aka Flex Data Services) from versions 0 through 3, BlazeDS, and networking portions of Flex SDK. These tools and client & server SDKs and stacks allowed developers to build applications that were fully competitive with native desktop applications in terms of graphics and interactivity, but with the advantages of a web deployment model. One of the industry-wide efforts I contributed to during this period was the Java Servlet 3.0 specification, which added nonblocking IO support to the Servlet API. This was a critical need for Flex Data Services and allowed us to deploy into Servlet containers, in addition to our proprietary Netty-based nonblocking publish-subscribe Java server for Flash Player clients.

Worked across the suite of macromedia.com web applications and backend integrations with partner services such as Salesforce CRM.Co-authored a physical book on using ColdFusion MX to build localizable, versionable, dynamic content management systems that could be fronted by Flash Applications or dynamic web applications.
