During the grid-connected mode… Show more When the inverter interfaced units will dominate the power production, their ability to provide ancillary services to the transmission power grid becomes essential for stability and reliability of the electric energy supply.The thesis research outlines the development of an improved control strategy to make the power electronic converter work in grid-connected and islanded mode and increase the provision of ancillary services during the grid-connected mode. During the grid-connected mode, the converter is designed to address the voltage and frequency instability following a fault. Also, the control is developed to address the overvoltage problems arising in the MMC-HVDC converters following a fault which can lead to blocking of the converter. The root cause of harmonic injection in offshore converters is also analysed. The following objectives are fulfilled as a part of the development of this project: •Development and implementation of necessary modifications in the detailed type-4 Wind turbine model in the RSCAD library to make it work as Grid-forming control in standalone operation.•Short-term voltage instability assessment of a system with a high share of wind turbine and the effect of the wind turbines on the voltage and transient stability.•Development of modified current control scheme and current limitation strategy to improve the dynamic and transient behaviour of wind turbine converters, and preserve its synchronization during grid events.•Analysis of Provision of frequency support by the proposed control strategy and comparison with methods such as Fast Active Power Injection.•Analysis of existing MMC VSC system for enabling point-to-point connection of type-4 wind turbine-based OWP for transfer of power higher than 500 MW•Determination of root cause behind the occurrence of transient overvoltages in the offshore grid after the blocking of the HVDC offshore converter and development of enhanced wind turbine control to eliminate such occurrences.
