As the team lead of the “Legislative Issues” team supporting the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)), I serve as a subject matter expert on communicating defense priorities to Congress, andprovide recommendations and guidance on legislative matters to senior policy officials and leaders. To that end, I research legislative measures impacting national security and defense priorities; assign and track congressional reporting requirements; coordinate legislative proposals and appeals, as well as input to Statements of Administration Policy; clear witness statements before, and Questions for the Record after congressional hearings; and write and distribute a semi-weekly Legislative Update newsletter.I also co-wrote and have delivered training courses on how to prepare and present briefings to senior policymakers, and on how to interact with Congress. As the team lead, I am responsible for training and mentoring new and junior staff, and I regularly review their research, memos, and presentations prior to delivery to senior leadership.
