When I was 17, I walked into my hometown photography studio to make an appointment for my graduation portraits. The phone was ringing; no one was around, and a yell came from the back of the studio, “Answer that, would you!?” I didn’t think – I just picked up the phone. “Thank you for calling Picture This Photography. This is Seth. How may I help you?”I walked out of the studio that day with a photo appointment and the start of a 20-year career in the creative services industry. After two years at the photo studio, I moved on to a different kind of studio – a television news studio. The news station gave me the opportunity to work every job in television operations from cameraman to master control operator, and I spent my final years in local news directing three newscasts a day.I used the experience I had gained in local television to launch into a career at NASA (pun intended) where I supported the recording and archiving of real-time human spaceflight video.I eventually moved to NASA’s Public Affairs Office to produce and direct mission coverage and coordinate live media interviews and events with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. I also travelled to Russia to oversee the video documentation and television coverage of NASA astronaut launch and landing activities with the Russian Federal Space Agency. After several long trips to chilly Moscow, I was ready to trade in my parka for flip-flops, and I relocated to sunny Florida to supervise television operations for Sarasota County Government. Along with managing the production of all things video, I have collaborated with and led project coordinators, graphic designers, webmasters and social media specialists to connect Sarasota County’s community members with their local government through just about every medium imaginable.It’s been 20 years of collaboration with creators, government officials, influencers and even astronauts, and all I’d set to do was have my cap and gown photos taken.
